Paris Hilton waxes philosophical about 'House'

·

There is much to look forward to in the upcoming horror flick "House of Wax." Exactly what that is, however, is a bit hard to say. The film, which opens May 6, stars Elisha Cuthbert ('The Girl Next Door," "24") and Chad Michael Murray ("Freaky Friday") as Carly and Nick Jones, fraternal twins who get stranded in a small Iowa town on their way to a college football game.

Drama doesn't preach

Imagine two actors. One, a talkative veteran, who has been in publicity interviews many times before, is relaxing on a hotel couch, with well-combed and parted hair and wearing a leather jacket. He is very open and seems to be interested in discussion and generally expanding his knowledge.

Fasten your seatbelts for the traditional road trip

Many college students will come home this summer to cars that have been sitting in the driveway for eight months. And there's no better way to reunite with the forgotten vehicle than by heading out for a stress-free trip on the open road. But before grabbing a friend and packing up the car, mapping out a route is important.

Opinion: No good reason to oppose estate tax

The problem with writing about something like the estate tax is that sane people have no way to respond. Let's say somebody walks up to you and says "I want to repeal the estate tax." Most people, being relatively sane, will respond with "What the hell? Why?" Then, when they realize that the repealer is serious, they'll start ranting.

Hair today, fro tomorrow

The dreaded D.C. humidity will soon be upon the city, so what are people at AU doing to ensure they won't be walking around like blow-dried poodles? Jabu Salazar, a graduate advisor in the School of Communication, said he changes up his daily regimen to include a special moisturizer from Pantene's line of products made for women of color.

A salute to the best of England's crown jewel

It turns out that London, the tea-drinking capital of the Western world, really shares more in common with a cup of coffee. Coffee is an acquired taste, often a bitter one, but it's full of enough heart-starting bliss to make anyone an addict after one cup.

'White Pony' stands out in Deftones discography

It was a few months ago, after I had a falling-out with a rather cruel young woman, when I found myself in the time-old blanket of every emotionally battered record snob: a drawn-out, 2 a.m. yelling match with my coffee shop-working friend, Evan, discussing our favorite records as nearby customers waited in silence for the swearing to stop.

AU Lax beats Bucknell, 14-8, ends 3-game slide

At the start of the second half of Saturday's match against Bucknell at Reeves Field, the AU Women's Lacrosse team seemed dangerously close to repeating the same mistakes that had mired it in a three-game slide. The Bison, who trailed by four at the break, scored three goals in the first five minutes.

Senior sets his sights on rock stardom after AU

A lot of people like talking up their plans to "cut an album" with their "band." Seth Kroll likes actually doing it. "We basically put everything we had into [our album]," Kroll said. "So now we're kind of broke, but we have something to show for it." Kroll, a senior in the School of International Service, is moving to Boston after graduation in May to reunite with the other four members of his band, Family Junction.

Letter to the editor

Dear Editor: Seth Johnson's line of reasoning that a liberal should not have an opinion on who becomes the next pope is specious at best. The U.S. Supreme Court has interpreted the First Amendment to require a "wall of separation" between church and state; thus it not only prohibits government from adopting an official denomination or religion, but requires government to avoid excessive involvement in religion.

'Death' descends on D.C.

Don't show up at Tuesday's Death From Above 1979 gig at the Black Cat in socks and sandals, the band's T-shirt and badly cut jeans. If you do, singer and drummer Sebastien Grainger may just punch you in the face, but that's merely speculation. He considers the above ensemble to be a "don't," a label commonly doled out by Vice Magazine, an edgy publication housed by the band's record label.

Mock hip-hop-umentary is big pimpin'

If more movies opened with a bling-encrusted rap artist holding fistfuls of cash and shaking two bottles of Armadale over a steaming hot tub full of honeys, maybe more movies would be box office hits. At least, that's what producer and director Damon Dash seemed to think when cutting together his mocumentary masterpiece, "Death of a Dynasty.

Like many other countries, Azerbaijan is considering becoming a member of World Trade Organization. But the road to the WTO membership can be long and difficult.
