Problems with online registration stresses students

Spring 2006 registration began on Oct. 31, which is often a frustrating and stressful experience for some students. The Office of the Registrar has added new features to AU's course registration page, according to its web site http://american.edu/registrar, including changes to its online list of classes that identify the class as a general education, distance learning, topics or university college courses.

According to new analysis, the percentage of minority students in American colleges is dropping at a dangerous rate. The National Council of Public Policy in Higher Education said that states need to do more to ensure that minorities continue on an upward trend in college graduation.

Financial aid falling behind for minorities

States must focus on the affordability of higher education at a time when tuition is rapidly increasing, but financial aid is falling behind for minority students, according to a recent report by the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education The education and income levels of American workers will decrease in the next decade if states do not do more to improve the number of college graduates from minority groups, according to the report.

First gender studies doctorate program created

Indiana University announced plans earlier this month to offer the first doctorate degree in the nation specifically in gender studies beginning in fall 2006. The difference between women's studies and gender studies has become a significant issue with the creation of the school's new gender studies doctoral program.

AU Players and Directing Techniques class not afraid to take dramatic risks

The Katzen Arts Center promised to be a place where members of the Performing Arts Department could take risks and enhance their craft. The first performances there have used that sense of creative license to push the envelope and try new things: The American Five used mathematic equations as the basis for a duet between a synthesizer and a cello, and the Chamber Singers used kazoos to give the "Barber of Seville" a new life.

AU happy with Bon App?tit as food service provider

AU students are generally happy with Bon App?tit, the school's food service provider, and its socially responsible practices despite students at more than 200 colleges protesting their campus food providers. Schools such as University of Portland and University of California are protesting their campus food providers, specifically Aramark and Sysco, for buying food overseas to save money instead of supporting local farmers and artisans, according to Time magazine.

Yohannes charge secures men's return to nationals

As AU and Princeton's last runners crossed the line in Saturday's NCAA Mideast Regional, the team race for second place - and a spot in the NCAA Championships - was too close to call. Princeton's top two runners finished fifth and sixth, both ahead of eighth-place AU sophomore Steve Hallinan on the course in Bethlehem, Pa.

SG Senate supports ex-board members' frustrations

The Undergraduate Senate passed a resolution yesterday supporting the four former members of the board of trustees who have resigned in recent months, in addition to a bill calling on the board to amend its bylaws in accordance with the recommendations by the Ad-Hoc University-Wide Committee on Reformation of University Governance.

'Helicopter parents' becoming problems on college campuses

A new issue that has been popping up across colleges in the U.S. is a phenomenon termed "helicopter parents," according to Issam Khoury, resident director of Letts Hall. So named because they have a tendency to hover over their child, these parents become involved in their children's campus lives, even dealing with issues between their son or daughter and his or her roommate.

Men's soccer misses the target in PL title game

The AU men's soccer team missed out on its fourth Patriot League championship in five years Sunday, losing to Lafayette (13-4-2) in the PL final, 1-0, at Reeves Field. Lafayette sophomore Luke Sullivan scored the game's only goal less than four minutes into the first half.

KPU speaker bashes feminism

"There are eternal differences between men and women," said political author and commentator Phyllis Schlafly at a speech last week at AU. Schlafly lashed out at the women's liberation movement of the 1960s and today. "They said they wanted liberation - what they meant was liberation from home, husband, family and children.

Movie not 'Derailed' by Aniston's performance

Some people will say Swedish director Mikael H?fstr?m's new film "Derailed" is lowbrow. Screw them. Some people will say "Derailed" is predictable. Screw them, too.
