To say that this year has been a challenge for me is quite an understatement. After spending many days and nights in The Eagle office holding staff meetings, working on breaking news stories and designing web and print projects, I was looking forward to finally celebrating my accomplishments with my friends and staff at the Student Media release party and, later, at graduation. After four tumultuous years as a student journalist, everything was starting to pay off, and I went on spring break to recharge for the second half of my final semester.

Graduate student Benjamin Brumer returned to campus Wednesday morning after being arrested by American University Police for unlawful entry Tuesday night. AU Police said Brumer refused to identify himself as a student after being asked several times, but Brumer is contradicting that account.

Women’s Initiative and Zero Waste teamed up to host a pop-up thrift shop on the AU quad on Oct. 23 and 24. The goal was to teach students how to shop for and recycle clothes to increase sustainability. All of the proceeds will benefit the Women’s Coalition of St Croix that provides housing and counseling resources to women in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Monday, May 1 was Taylor Dumpson’s first day as student government president. Just hours after taking office, her excitement turned to heartache. Sleepy-eyed students, drained from a pre-finals all nighter in Bender Library, spotted bananas hanging from nooses on campus. The bananas targeted her and her historically African-American sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha.

Sophomore and AU Student Government Elections Commissioner Luis Ballester’s nomination to become judicial board chair, which “leads the Judicial Board and Judicial Branch of the Student Government,” was rejected by the Undergraduate Senate on Sunday, April 9. Another appointment could be made at the senate meeting on April 23.

Junior Taylor Dumpson will serve as the next Student Government president and AU’s first black female SG president during the 2017-2018 academic year, winning 45.7 percent of the total unofficial vote count, according to SG Elections Commissioner Luis Ballester.
