Any artist who performs at the 9:30 club typically thanks the audience - the people of D.C. M.I.A., the multigenre, London-based rapper, chanted additional shout-outs to the CIA and FBI, organizations that once assisted in banning her entry into the United States and preventing her from returning to her Brooklyn apartment. Her familial tie to a Tamil Tiger may have slowed her down in the past, but now, more than ever, her provocative infusion of politics into her rhymes is rapidly making her the hippest artist of the year.

From the corn-fed cows that beef up our hamburgers to the corn syrup that thickens our soda, corn has become a major crop in the United States. In their documentary film "King Corn," best friends Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis take a trip to the heartland to discover the methods of producing the United States' favorite crop. The film follows the production of their acre of corn month by month, from the initial inquiries in February to the harvest in November.

Sewing a button is more than a handy skill for those in the do-it-yourself community. It can be a rite of passage, a hobby or even a livelihood. People who do it themselves can also hone a variety of skills: knitting, metal work, jewelry-making, carving, painting or any real creative art by using their hands. In the spirit of DIY appreciation, many gathered for the DIY arts-and-crafts fair, Crafty Bastards, last Sunday at the Marie Reed Learning Center in Adams Morgan.

A thick dust settles over the arena as partners Keith Huber and Rob Sterner tie a magenta bow on the tail of an incredibly animated steer. The steer twitches severely, jumping up on its hind legs to avoid being pegged with the vibrant strip of cloth. After several noble attempts, the arena clown, whose uniform dons the moniker "Arena Bitch," announces, "That steer does not like that color, and I don't blame him!"
