The campus-wide discussion about the Clean Energy Revolving Fund referendum brought to light a variety of student opinions regarding environmental policy and sustainability on campus. While the electoral victor was ultimately clear, it was also evident from the responses on the issue that the presence of passionate feelings existed in students both for and against. Preliminary signs suggest that some university group’s consideration of eradicating bottled water use on campus — as opposed to their reasonable efforts to reduce its use — may provoke a similarly polarizing response.

It’s happened to all of us. You’re in your room and you think the door is locked. You’re finally getting into the groove and then, bam! Your mother, father or roommate busts into the room and everybody feels very, very embarrassed.

In my last column, I took a hard look at how our food system is failing our children and how this is contributing to our problem with childhood obesity in America. Tomorrow night, ABC will premiere chef Jamie Oliver’s new television series “Food Revolution.” Throughout the series, Oliver will work to combat this issue in the town of Huntington, W.Va., which was recently named the unhealthiest city in America. I can’t yet speak to the impact his efforts will have, but I support the show for bringing attention to a problem so often overlooked. Oliver chose an avenue where he can best combat it, which is through cooking and food education.

Recently, I had found myself avoiding participating in and even attending interfaith events. The usual dance with the same crowd speaking the same rhetoric had dulled me to a point that I no longer found great benefit in their pursuit. Enter the National Cathedral and its historic Christian-Muslim Summit held there earlier this month.

On Tuesday and Wednesday there will be a student election where we’ll get to decide the fate of clean energy at AU. It will be the culmination of a 10-month long process. Last May, I received an interesting e-mail from AU alumnus Marie Stratton. In the e-mail was a link to Macalester College’s Clean Energy Revolving Fund, whose mission is to “encourage global sustainability on campus and in the community, by funding innovative projects that demonstrate environmental leadership and economic benefit.” The idea struck me as brilliant.

Again and again in this election season we've heard calls for transparency in the Student Government. The candidates and the judicial boards have talked plenty. I think it's worth hearing a word or two from the rest of us.

Many people are feeling a little lost about what movie constitutes a “must see” after all the Oscar anticipation and excitement. They are ready to take a break from heavier films but don’t exactly want to see the latest romantic comedy. The Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital provides the perfect medium of thought-provoking, inspiring and motivating films.

In my last column, I looked at the shortfalls of Michelle Obama’s new “Let’s Move” campaign to end childhood obesity and the problems it poses regarding body image issues. This week I’m going to use the campaign as a springboard into what I feel is an even more dire issue: what lies at the heart of the obesity problem — our broken food system.

Let’s examine the typical transportation costs of the working AU student. Laden with an unpaid internship — we’ll say in Farrugut North —and working three days a week, the logical transportation method of choice would be the Metro. The benefits are clear: convenient locations, the sustainability of public transportation. But most importantly, it’s cheap.

SANTIAGO, Chile — At first I thought it was just the loud music of the club, or that I had possibly had too much to drink. My second thought was that the vibrating dance floor was some sort of cool Chilean special effect.
