Over the past two weeks, AU Athletics has been very active and successful. However, the coverage of these events by The Eagle has been sub-par.
The school has had the field hockey team, volleyball and cross-country teams win regular season and Patriot League championships with no front-page mention of these events at all. The past week's pep rally did not get a mere article in the paper or any publicity before the event took place. There was just one picture on the back of the first section.
AU is trying to gain national recognition in both the athletic and academic arenas, and The Eagle should be giving equal attention to both. The paper also keeps sports stuck on the back page of the paper in its semiweekly editions. This is counterproductive to the goals of AU and the milestones we hope to reach in the upcoming years. Simple things like reminders about pep rallies and sports events can be a great start to raising attendance and supporting athletics.
As a freshman, I realize that we are not a powerhouse athletic school. However, it is possible for the university to become one with cooperation between the school and the students.
