If you were on the Quad in the last few days, chances are you've seen a girl dressed as a windmill.
The students from EcoSense are pushing a ballot initiative that would require AU to get 50 percent of its energy from clean sources by 2012. And they don't mean "clean coal."
Last year, AU's energy costs soured 20 percent, amounting to $263 per student, according to administration figures. You need only watch CNBC and see the price of oil rise and fall on very delicate whims.
EcoSense claims that AU would save the energy equivalent to driving 21 million miles. We think this is something all of AU can get behind; not just the usual suspects.
EcoSense acknowledges that it will take an intial investment by AU into a wind field in West Virginia, but that over time, wind energy will cost less than oil.
With tuition and other fees on the rise, it would be a welcome change for many to not have to pay as much to AU ever year. Even though we may not see the benefits of the prorgram during our time here, future AU students will have us to thank.
We urge everyone to vote "Yes"
