SC, greeks call it an 'AU night'

The Student Confederation, along with Greek Life and the Washington Wizards, presented a check for $10,000 to the Children's Miracle Network Tuesday night at "AU Night" at the MCI Center.

The money will go to the Kids Care Fund, which supports the basic needs of child health care, and to the Children's National Medical Center in D.C., said Kelly O'Neill, coordinator of Events and Promotions for the Network.

"The fund includes things as little as Looney Tunes pajamas and chocolate ice cream all the way to the $45 million in uncompensated care we give each year to kids who can't afford it," she said.

The Network is an alliance of 170 hospitals across North America, O'Neill said.

"They work to provide sponsorship for these hospitals on a nationwide basis so they can continue to provide high-quality pediatric care to these kids," she said.

Tickets for Tuesday night's Wizards game were purchased in bulk by nine individual fraternities and sororities for $10 each, SC President Nick Terzulli said. The tickets - which have a face value of at least $40 - were then sold for $20 to the campus community with the proceeds going to the Network, he said.

More than 1,400 tickets were sold, Terzulli said.

The Greek organizations bought as many tickets as they thought they could sell and once they sold their batch, they could buy more, Terzulli said.

"With 30 or 40 members in each greek organization and with nine organizations, you're talking 360 people who know about it and are telling their friends, and it builds and builds and builds," said Kyle Taylor, vice-chairman of the Dance Marathon, another AU-sponsored charity event for the Network.

The Dance Marathon raised nearly $8,000 for the organization last spring, and another 16-hour Dance Marathon is scheduled for early April, he said.

"It's going to be a really fun event, but at the same time we're able to really connect with the hospital and create a relationship with the children," Taylor said.

In addition to his leadership role with the Dance Marathon, Taylor also coordinated the pre-party in the Tavern on the night of the game that featured food, prizes and AUTO rides to the Tenleytown etro station.

Terzulli said he was pleased with the campus community's support for this event.

"This event really proved what AU can do when they bound together and work for a common cause to help those less fortunate," he said.

The fraternities involved included Alpha Sigma Phi, Delta Tau Delta, Sigma Chi, Alpha Epsilon Pi and Pi Kappa Alpha. Sororities included Alpha Chi Omega, Delta Gamma, Phi Mu and Alpha Epsilon Phi.

O'Neill said she appreciated all the effort the various AU organizations put into achieving their goal of $10,000.

"We've never had a university do something like this for us before," she said. "We're looking forward to their continued support."

All the money raised will stay in the D.C. area, O'Neill said. "Any of the money raised locally stays locally," she said. "That's why all the hard work that these AU students did to raise this $10,000 will go to help kids in the D.C. region"
