Faced with a 62-all tie with nine minutes remaining in yesterday's Phil Bender game against Lafayette College, seniors forward Brian Gilmore and Garrison Carr combined to score 10 of the team's final 16 points as the Eagles pulled away for a 78-65 victory.

An alternative look at sports

On the first football-free Sunday of the year, alternative sports took center stage. With the Super Bowl less than a week away, the sports media is a buzz about the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals. While Ben Roethlisberger and the Kurt Warner are the center of attention now, several different athletes grabbed the spotlight last weekend, including snowboarding's Shaun White and figure skating's Alissa Czisny.

LAYING UP - Sophomore forward Liz Leer goes up for a layup in last night's game against Navy, scoring two of her 18 points of the night.  The effort was not enough to prevent a 68-61 loss for the Eagles.

New career highs in points for sophomore forwards Michelle Kirk and Liz Leer were not enough for the AU women's basketball team to overcome the U.S. Naval Academy Midshipmen last night at Bender Arena, losing by a final score of 68-61. The loss drops the Eagles' record to 14-7 overall and 4-2 in the Patriot League.

Big East, ACC Dominate AP Men's College Basketball Polls

Dominance was the only word that can be used to describe this week's Associated Press top 25 teams. The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and the Big East Conference represented 11 teams in the top 25. Not to mention seven of the top 10. To put this in perspective, eight conferences represented the remaining 14 schools.

Manny being Manny still best in MLB

Over the final two months of the 2008 season, Manny Ramirez put up historic numbers with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ramirez, 36, hit an astounding .396 with 17 home runs and 53 RBIs over the final two months of the regular season as the Dodgers surged to win the NL West.

Carr's three gives Eagles win

It was not until a final second three-pointer clanged off the rim and bounced to the floor before the AU men's basketball team could finally exhale, having survived a wild 68-67 victory over the U.S. Naval Academy Midshipmen last night. The win improves the Eagles' record to 12-7 on the season and 4-1 in the Patriot League.

Win propels Eagles into first

The AU women's basketball team moved into first place in the Patriot League after its 64-58 win over the College of the Holy Cross Crusaders Saturday. Sophomore forward Michelle Kirk and redshirt junior guard Nicole Ryan led the Eagles' offense with a combined 35 points, while sophomore forward Liz Leer orchestrated the defense with four blocks and seven rebounds.

Men's b-ball suffers first league loss

Despite a game-high 19 points from senior point guard Derrick Mercer, the AU men's basketball team was unable to complete their comeback against the College of the Holy Cross Crusaders Saturday afternoon, losing on the road 71-62. The loss is the first for the Eagles in Patriot League play and dropped their overall record to 11-7 on the season.

From fisticuffs to front of the net

The San Jose Sharks have Claude Lemieux, Calgary has Todd Bertuzzi and the Capitals have Donald Brashear. All three of these players are enforcers or big men. They are on the ice for one purpose, to hit people. For the last three years, Brashear has filled that role for the Washington Capitals.

Ryan paces Eagles to easy win

Redshirt junior guard Nicole Ryan scored a game-high 17 points to lead the AU women's basketball team to a 63-47 victory over Colgate University Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Eagles' record to 12-6 on the season and 2-1 in the Patriot League. The game started off strong for the Eagles, as the team went on a quick 13-6 run in the first seven and a half minutes of the first half on the strength of three three-pointers by senior guard Talicia Jackson, Ryan and freshman guard Lisa Strack.

No. 3 Cannon, No. 12 Borshoff lead wrestling

No. 3 redshirt junior 174-pound class Mike Cannon and No. 12 junior 149-pound class Kyle Borshoff helped pace the AU wrestling team to a 3-1 duel record over the weekend. The team defeated the U.S. Naval Academy on Friday before beating Clarion University and Gardner-Webb University at the Indiana Duels Sunday.

Gilmore, Eagles claw Raiders

Senior forward Brian Gilmore scored a career-high 28 points, including 18 in the first half alone, to lead the AU men's basketball team to their sixth-straight victory, 79-49, over Colgate University Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Eagles' record to 11-6 on the season and a perfect 3-0 in the Patriot League.

Carr, Mercer boost Eagles

Senior guard Garrison Carr's game-high 25 points and Derrick Mercer's career-high 12 assists combined to lead the AU men's basketball team to a strong 69-55 victory over the Bucknell University Bison Wednesday night. The team's fifth straight win improves their record to 10-6 and a perfect 2-0 in Patriot League play.

AU wrestling upsets UNC, 25-19

The AU wrestling team upset the University of North Carolina Saturday, slamming the Tar Heels 25-19 at Bender Arena. Junior Kyle Borshoff, ranked 13th in the nation at 149-pound weight class, defeated UNC's Thomas Scotton in a dramatic dual. Wrestling in a heavier weight class, Borshoff pulled off a last minute take down, grabbing a 5-2 win and the AU team's victory.

AU track places well at Navy

The AU men's track team competed at a five-school meet Saturday at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. The other four schools that participated at the meet were Navy, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Sophomore forwards Liz Leer and Michelle Kirk averaged over 12 points per game and six rebounds per game while leading the AU women's basketball team to a 4-3 record over winter break. The Eagles began their break with two home games against Princeton University on Dec.
