Op-Ed: Same problem, new university

I’ve seen it before in Wisconsin, and I’m seeing it in D.C. today. Back in 2008 and 2009, local communities, especially in Milwaukee, wanted the University of Wisconsin to crack down on students’ off-campus conduct. The police had more important things to do than show up to cite students for breaking a noise ordinance, and area residents wanted the universities to force their students to be good neighbors.

Exploring AU’s claims to diversity

American University prides itself on diversity. Ambassadors are constantly telling all prospective students about the wide range of nationalities, social/cultural backgrounds, and future aspirations that they will find on AU’s campus.

Letter to the editor: AU ignores strengths with ‘wonk’

Geography can be helpful (or hindering) in building up the brand of a university. Certainly the city of Boston imbues a certain heritage of debate and American investigation upon the Harvard Crimson. As if to say, it’s cold here so the privileged (Emerson, Holmes, Thoreau) prefer to stay inside and pontificate.

Letter to the editor: Pacifism and propaganda

Before I can say anything about why I do not subscribe to pacifist ideology, first, before anything else, I feel the need to clear up some glaring misconceptions you seem to have about the history of pacifism and its role in social movements.

Getting to KNOW/WONK

By now, we’ve all seen the invasion of “wonk” on campus. From “Service wonks” and “Welcome wonks” to Peace and Global wonk T-shirts, wonk has infiltrated campus life — but not without some controversy.

‘Citizen of the world’ enters The Eagle’s nest

It strikes me as a tad ironic to have matriculated to AU. I consider myself a citizen of the world before a citizen of the United States. I shun patriotic pride and claim no honor in anything without the prerequisite of merit. Blind patriotism is analogous with white pride, black pride, gay pride or straight pride. Seems to me I had no choice in the matter, and if I did, I would’ve preferred to resemble Denzel Washington instead of a collision between Kramer and Andy Roddick.

Filmmakers have moral duty to accurately depict wild

Sharks in a bloody feeding frenzy, thrashing in the water and devouring their prey. Bears tearing and clawing away at whatever unfortunate creature comes within their grasp. These scenes have become commonplace in recent years as part of the larger explosion in nature and wildlife programming on television and in theaters. But how much do we know about how these films are made?

Letter to the editor

I write to you as a very concerned alumnus. Little did I realize, when I innocently opened an e-mail from The Eagle that today would mark the day that I was completely humiliated by my university. The lead story on the “Wonk” campaign filled me with repulsion and dread. Please, as a concerned alumni, let me explain why I am so horrified by this public relations move.

Letter from the editor

Because of financial difficulties, The Eagle will publish once weekly on Tuesdays this year. This change is unpleasant but may provide opportunities for better reporting.

Section 202 hosts Connor Sturniolo and Gabrielle McNamee are joined by fellow Eagle staff member and phenomenal sports photographer, Josh Markowitz. Follow along as they discuss the United Football League and the benefits it provides for the world of professional football.
