Opinion: Former opponents endorse Taylor

Today is the run-off election for Student Confederation president. The choice before you is between Kyle Taylor and Joe Gallina, and we hope you all vote, especially since the margin of victory could be as small as the four votes that separated Taylor and Gallina in the general election.

In last week's Student Government presidential election, Joe Gallina and Kyle Taylor both won about 30 percent of the vote, necessitating a run-off election between the two for Thursday. Though our endorsed candidate, James Gardner, did not earn enough votes to be part of the run-off, we will follow Gardner's lead and pass on our endorsement to Taylor in the run-off.

Opinion: Before cutting teams, AU should have asked students

As you may have heard, American University's Athletics Department announced that Men's and Women's Tennis and Men's Golf will be disbanded at the end of the year. There was no prior warning of this decision, and the players seemingly have no recourse. The University should not have the ultimate authority to disband student athletics without some form of student review.

American University has drawn the last straw. It shows no respect whatsoever for athletics and the hard work our student-athletes put in. And cutting the Men's and Women's Tennis programs, along with the golf program, is the final straw. It is ridiculous for AU to be considered a credible school in the academic and athletic world when it pulls stunts like this.

The AU Athletics Department announced Thursday that it will discontinue the Men's Golf and Men's and Women's Tennis programs after this season ends. Though the decision was deliberated for more than a year, the Athletics Department never made the AU community aware until after the decision was made.

A nylon banner advertising James Gardner's candidacy for SC president was stolen from the Quad on Saturday. The thief apparently burned the strings holding up the sign and made off with it. The weight of the sign and the metal grommets suggests that it wasn't a random decision to yank the sign, but a premeditated act to get away with it without anyone noticing it being dragged through the Quad.

For several weeks, mice have been found in the dorms of Tenley Campus. Far from the cute, cuddly mice the Disney Channel advertises, these rodents live between rooms in Tenley and frighten residents. We are fairly sure Luke from the 1990 film "The Witches" is not enrolled in AU; aside from him, there should be no mice in dorms.

As a dear friend of the Men's Tennis team but also a fellow student-athlete here at AU, I was incredibly shocked with the decision to cut the tennis and golf teams after the 2005 spring season. Being a relatively small campus and athletic program, we have formed a community within student-athletes.
