Staff editorial: No more break for students at Chipotle

The popular TDR substitute Chipotle abruptly cancelled free drinks upon showing your student ID. According to the new management at Chipotle's Tenleytown location, free soft drinks were supposed to be only a limited time offer. Somehow it lasted four years.

Kyle Taylor fights for AU

·

As a recent addition to the Board of Trustees Governance Committee as a student representative, I find it important to clarify Student Government President Kyle Taylor's role in ensuring student interests are given priority by the board. In a recent editorial, columnist Jonathan D.

Staff editorial: Int'l enrollment down at US colleges

After 9/11, enrollment of international students in U.S. colleges dropped for the first time since the 1970's. The fear of terrorism was the economic hardship placed on applicants who had to jump through several legal and bureaucratic hurdles in the hope of cracking open a book in the U.

GOP offers serious black candidates

I have a dream. I have a dream that one day, the voice of the ethnic minorities will be heard and represented in all political parties, whether it is red, green, or blue. For years, there were promises from the GOP that it would once again uphold Lincoln's legacy and become the party of racial inclusion.

Student senate needs to go

I know that this will come as a shock to anyone who has ever glanced at my column, but I do not like the Student Government. I think that it is a holding pen for the self-important who used to run their high schools and now want to convince themselves that they are that much closer to their destined seat in Congress and thus that much closer to saving the world.

Staff editorial: AU must clarify its disaster response plan

Since AU is in the nation's capital, and America remains a target of terrorists worldwide, it is not surprising to hear that businesses and schools in the area have plans if another attack should happen. We just aren't so sure what our school's plan is. Homeland Security's main compound sits across Ward Circle, and apparently they are ready to respond should something happen and people need to be evacuated.

Staff editorial: AU should divest itself from Darfur

The rampant genocide that has been occuring in the Darfur region of Sudan has garnered international attention. However, what it has not garnered thus far is large scale divestment from the country. We feel that AU should have nothing to do with profitting ffrom a country that savagely and nonchalantly allows the slaughter of millions of its people.

'Wrong' is Will Haun's new middle name

American University will cause any logical person with the slightest concept of political ideas to become steaming mad at one idea or another. The outlets for such emotion generally consist of uselessly irrational political banter. Having felt such pressures before, I want to thank Will Haun for writing an article so asinine that I actually chuckled and became happy rather than angry.

Staff editorial: E-textbooks: a new take on the original

The campus bookstore has begun offering e-textbooks, which allow you to read course materials on your computer. While it may be convenient and sometimes cheaper, e-textbooks would require you to print out pages if you want to take them with you, and this makes highlighting and marking tedious.

Staff editorial: S. Dakota abortion law start of showdown

Last week, South Dakota's legislature passed a ban on abortion, except in the case of the life of the mother. There are no exceptions for rape or incest, and doctors face up to five years in prison for performing an abortion. Newspapers have also chronicled how the abortion dividing lines are being drawn increasingly according to the Red State/Blue State electoral map.

Staff editorial: How truthful is your resume?

A new online service, fakeresumes.com, is offering students help in getting the jobs they deserve by fluffing up resumes with nice but completely false information. The cost of all this? Around $100 for a "tune up." We are disheartened to learn that according to a study, 53 percent of Americans embellish their resumes, and 70 percent of college students do.

Letters to the editor

Dear Editor: Over the past three weeks or so I have noticed a startling omission from your otherwise fine publication. There once was a time when every Thursday, I would open my copy of?The Eagle, eyes aglow with anticipation, and read the police blotter, marvelling at the heroic deeds of our brave Public Safety officers and laughing at the occasional humorous incident.

Cartoons: all sides suffer from ignorance

As a student planning to travel to Copenhagen next fall, I read the articles regarding the Danish cartoon reactions around the world with great curiosity. These types of outbursts and rioting are something I have never heard of or seen before. It reminds of the stories I've heard regarding the images that came back from Vietnam.

U.S. must 'trust its ability to protect national security'

To quote Sean Hannity, "In foreign policy poker, the United States plays with its cards face up." This has become a melancholy truth in light of the endless supply of intelligence leaks that spur debates about civil liberties instead of the national security that provides civil liberties.

Staff editorial: WVAU: give it a listen and some funding

American University's student radio station does not live up to station billing. We can't blame them since they have been undercut by the institution it is here to serve. Only available through an Internet stream and iTunes, a call sign would be a welcome change-the audience would increase and hosts could actually feel like they're reaching people.

Section 202 hosts Connor Sturniolo and Gabrielle McNamee are joined by fellow Eagle staff member and phenomenal sports photographer, Josh Markowitz. Follow along as they discuss the United Football League and the benefits it provides for the world of professional football.
