Not even Zacharias Moussaoui deserves death penalty

·

I am utterly disgusted by the fact that I live in a country that still sees fit to practice capital punishment. I firmly believe that the death penalty is just one of those things that, given the moral clarity of hindsight, when its abolition becomes a reality years from now, we will look back on this barbaric practice and say to ourselves, "What were we thinking?" The same has proven true for such travesties of American history as the denial of women's suffrage, slavery, and the Japanese internment during World War II.

Staff editorial: Annual day of silence ends with a quiet scream

GLBT students ended their annual day of silence with a group scream on the quad. After not speaking for an entire day, a silence symbolizing marginalized GLBT people, the scream was not only an outlet for pent-up speech, but also pent-up anger. Many students agree that AU is generally a GLBT-friendly campus and issue awareness is strong.

Corrections and Clarifications

In response to feedback regarding the April 17 issue of The Eagle, content from a subscription news service was used because the issue's publication deadline conflicted with the Easter holiday. The choice to use wire content does not signal a change in The Eagle's use of original, student-written content in future issues.

Enforcing immigration laws is necessary; not racist or unkind

The current immigration debate has succeeded in providing, to quote President Bush, a "comprehensive" look at its legal, cultural, and economic aspects. The problem is most of the solutions proposed are political, with Democrats doing everything to paint Conservatives as racist and some Republicans more concerned about the Hispanic vote than law enforcement.

U.S. should seek fair, practical solution on immigration

Fear and anger are effective political tools. I was sorry to see the GOP use these weapons to stir the American people, urging a crackdown on illegal immigrants. Concentrating solely on border control and ignoring the plight of the hard working illegal immigrants and the better interest of the US economy, the GOP-controlled House passed in December a law to treat illegal immigrants as felons and punish even those who help them.

Staff editorial: Student volunteers pitch in to spruce up campus

Kudos to the four hundred plus volunteers who mulched, planted and labored as part of this year's Campus Beautification Day. The barbecue and free stuff, including "Be Beautiful" shirts and giveaways from Nextel, certainly helped draw volunteers, but the early start time limited participation.

Staff editorial: Palenstinian awareness week successful; rare

Last week the Students for Justice in Palestine hosted an awareness week on the quad, pitching an eye-catching white tent and hosting exhibits to raise Palentinian cultural and political awareness among AU students. The annual event raises awareness on issues affecting Palestinians in the ongoing problems with Israel.

Staff editorial: St. Paul, Minn., City Hall evicts Easter Bunny

ÿ No, the headline is not wrong. St. Paul really did ban the Easter Bunny from its city hall building. The conflicts of recent years over religious holiday displays has now gone from impassioned to silly. The reasoning given by city officals was that the Easter Bunny, the loveable creature you had your picture taken with when you were 2 years old, would offend non-Christians.

Staff editorial: AU students march to 'take back the night'

Students gathered Tuesday night at Glover Gate and took part in the annual "Take Back the Night" observance. The event drew a large crowd, and it was encouraging to see men as well as women out in support of rape victims and prevention. After marching around campus chanting slogans against violence, the participants gathered in Kay to hear from rape vicitims and support them on the road to recovery.

Death penalty for Moussaoui

Yesterday the government rested its case against Zacarias Moussaoui, a French citizen of Moroccan descent who is the only person charged with a crime in the September 11 terrorist attacks. Moussaoui was convicted in the criminal phase of the trial, and the jury has already decided he is eligible for the death penalty.

Transparency needed in divestment from Sudan

Genocide continues to occur in Sudan and, despite claims of "never again," meaningful response is still lacking. Among American University's community, concern about this issue is widespread, but translating those feelings into action has been more difficult.

Staff editorial: AU faces loss of caring and involved student

ÿ American University lost a caring person and a smiling face Saturday when Ramona Narine passed away. The AU junior was very active on campus and left her mark on many lives. Narine died when the vehicle she was driving collided with another on a rain-slicked road Saturday.

Student Gov't in good hands; must go forward

Today, the Student Government must move forward, and so must I as well as all the other undergraduate students at this institution. I love American University with all my heart. Over the course of the past few weeks I have had the honor to meet and converse with my peers in a way few others have ever had the pleasure to do.

Will Haun strikes out again

Positive and evolutionary political ideas are active processes that are supported by innovative ideas instead of rigid, dualist ideologies. A political opinion does not break down to some range between light and dark but is instead one of an endless amount of precise sides in a political debate, supported with reason and intelligence.

Staff editorial: Limitations on same-sex marriage begin in Mass.

After Massachusetts legalized gay marriage in 2003, a flood of same-sex couples inundated the state to get married. However, a little-known 1913 law bars the Commonwealth from recognizing a marriage not recognized out of state. What should be pointed out is that the 1913 law was originally used to stop interracial marriages.

Corrections

In the April 3 article SG candidate's video violates BOE rules, and the staff editorial "BOE needs to grow up," The Eagle did not include the fact that Ashley Mushnick's video also showed interior shots of Mary Graydon Center, which was a factor in the BOE complaint against the presidential candidate.

Staff editorial: Our take: SG elections

ÿ In what is said to be the highest student turnout ever, more than 1,800 AU undergaduates voted in the Student Goverment elections. The candidates fought hard and the election was less hyped than some in recent history. ÿ Ashley Mushnick was elected president with 50.
