Men's hoops yields rare loss to Mids

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The AU men's basketball team did something Wednesday it hadn't done in almost 20 years: lose at Navy. The theme of the 77-68 loss appeared to revolve around breaking streaks. Navy (7-11, 1-4 Patriot League) snapped its winless streak in league play.

Grand opening promotes fair trade

AU celebrated the grand opening of the Pura Vida caf? yesterday with a ribbon cutting ceremony saluting the efforts of students, faculty and administration to make more fair trade products available to the campus. Pura Vida representatives, along with members of the AU community, shared their thoughts on the new vendor and were given free lattes at the Wednesday morning ceremony in Mary Graydon Center.

Defense classifies college protests 'suspicious incidents'

Eight protests against military recruitment on college campuses were included among more than 1,500 "suspicious incidents" listed in the Department of Defense's Threat and Local Observations Notice database, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education.

AU board will have seats for students

Students will serve as non-voting members on many of the AU board of trustees' committees, but not on the pivotal Trusteeship or Compensation committees, which decide who will join the board and how much the president will be paid, student leaders said last night.

Third season is the charm

With a 6-13 record and an offense that has struggled to consistently score points, the AU men's basketball team hasn't exactly had a successful first half of the season. But one of the major bright spots for the Eagles this season has been the improved play of junior guard Arvydas Eitutavicius, who has transformed from marginal role player to the second leading scorer on the team with 11.

Last of the great ones puts away his skates

Growing up there were four superstars in the four major sports I came to admire and love the most. In basketball there was Michael Jordan, football had Emmitt Smith, baseball had Frank Thomas, and hockey had Mario Lemieux. On Tuesday Mario Lemieux announced his retirement for the second and probably last time.

Navy adds to women's PL struggles

The AU women's basketball team suffered its third straight Patriot League defeat, losing, 80-70, to the Navy Midshipwomen Tuesday night at Annapolis, Md. The Eagles were led by senior Tala Hadavi, who scored a career-high 24 points, including shooting 5 of 10 from 3-point range.

NY Times editor fatally mugged in Friendship Heights

AU students are concerned about the recent fatal mugging of New York Times editor David Rosenbaum earlier this month. Students who walk to neighborhood jobs are particularly concerned about the attack, which occurred a few blocks from campus. Katie Maxwell, a sophomore in the School of International Service who teaches piano for a family in Friendship Heights, said she has someone drive her back to campus from her job in the winter because it already dark.

Staff editorial: Rummy is watching

It has come to light that the Pentagon has opened files on campus protests against military recruiters. Only one protest at the University of California-Santa Cruz was deemed a "credible threat." The military said these protests were a danger to homeland security, and to some extent we see what they mean.

Student Government AUTO Commissioner Mohammed Khan stepped down earlier this week to pursue other opportunities outside AU. Last semester, AUTO helped to alleviate some of the problems students experienced with transportation between Main Campus, Park Bethesda and the Washington College of Law.

Recent controversies question Wikipedia's reliability

Many AU students use Wikipedia, a Web-based free-content encyclopedia, as a source for papers and other class assignments despite recent controversy surrounding the Web site. Wikipedia uses wiki software on the site so users can add and edit content. The name is based on the Hawaiian word "wiki," which means "quick," "fast," or "to hasten," according to the Web site.

Track gets good mileage in Landover

AU mile runners dominated at the Maryland Invitational in Landover, Md., Saturday as senior Keira Carlstrom and junior Brendan Fennell won the women's and men's miles, respectively. Carlstrom had no trouble in the women's mile, breaking out into the lead early.

Summit aims to resolve Ugandan conflict

In order to develop an action plan for conflict resolution among American and African youth in Uganda, AU grad students Charmagne Campbell-Patton and Jaime Alvis participated in the Global Youth Summit in Kampala with students from around the world. Campbell-Patton and Alvis traveled with 23 other American students from 20 different universities to Makerere University in Kampala, where they met up with 25 students from ten different universities in Uganda.
