AU lends muscle to campaigns

AU students are participating in numerous political campaigns, such as the November midterm elections, to gain valuable political experience that can be applied to future career plans. Jordan Landry, who graduated in 2006 from the School of Public Affairs, said student involvement can be crucial to a campaign's success.

National brief: Clinton brokers healthy snack deal

Former President Bill Clinton and the American Heart Association announced they have entered into a voluntary agreement with various food companies to make schoolchildren's snacks healthier, according to the Associated Press. Snacks will have less fat, salt and sugar in an effort to cut down on the number of cases of childhood obesity, according to the AP.

Unexpected matchup brings unlimited talent to ALCS

The Detroit Tigers and the Oakland A's are set to square off in what might be the least predicted ALCS in recent memory. Of the two teams, Oakland appeared in the ALCS most recently in 1990, when Mark McGwire still looked like Marky Mark. Despite the unlikely participants, the 2006 ALCS promises to be one of the better playoff series since the Red Sox beat the Yankees in 2004.

Of all the nation's pundits, there are few as successful or as controversial as Ann Coulter, who subscribes to the "kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity" school of foreign policy. Bringing in such a quote may seem unfair, but it's nigh impossible to talk about Coulter in a rational tone.

No action from Senate committee

The board of trustees and Student Government President Ashley Mushnick have not heard from the Senate Finance Committee since submitting a final report after the board's June meeting, according to Mushnick and presidential Chief of Staff David Taylor. The final report detailed the governance reforms enacted by the board and also addressed the committee's requests for further documentation from the university, according to Taylor.

AU students brave rain to fight HIV/AIDS

Despite the chilling rain that fell Saturday morning, AU students gathered in Freedom Plaza to support the 25th annual Aids Walk Washington. Many campus organizations formed teams to participate in the walk, including the Class of 2009, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.

MARCH The board of trustees' six-member Executive Committee receives an anonymous whistle-blower's letter, alleging then-President Benjamin Ladner had used university money for personal expenses, including a French chef, expensive vacations and family parties.

Town hall examines budget

The University Budget Committee held its first town hall meeting Tuesday for the formulation of the budget for the 2008-2009 fiscal year. Ivy Broder, interim provost, and Don Myers, treasurer and vice president of finance, said the open forum would be crucial in deciding the priorities of the university budget.

Three concerts captivate crowds

UMPHREY'S McGEE As six-piece jam band Umphrey's McGee took the stage at the 9:30 club last Thursday night, the crowd took a deep breath in and didn't exhale all night. The entranced crowd began to sway and dance as the band played the first notes of "Intentions Clear," a song off their newest album "Safety in Numbers," released in April of this year.

SPA major restructured

AU students studying political science in the School of Public Affairs will now be able to choose from six areas of specialization as part of the restructuring of the political science major, according to department of government adviser Nat Williamson. The six areas of concentration are Policy; American Government; Comparative Politics; Law and Politics; Political Theory; and Race, Gender and Politics.

Victorious weekend for Eagles in women soccer

The AU women's soccer team had a very successful weekend, picking up their first two PL victories with a 1-0 win over Holy Cross on Friday followed by a 2-1 triumph over Army on Sunday. The two wins for the Eagles improved the Eagles to 8-4-0 on the year and more importantly gave them a 2-1-0 record in the competitive Patriot League.

Beatles cover band makes splash

"Rain: The Beatles Experience" Grade: A Beatlemania is sweeping the nation once again. "Rain: The Beatles Experience" played the first of three weekend shows on Friday for a packed crowd at the Warner Theatre. As covered in a previous issue of The Eagle, Rain is the preeminent Beatles tribute band in the United States.

Matthews cancels talk, KPU replaces speaker

The Kennedy Political Union will present Cherie Booth Blair, Queen's Counsel and wife of Tony Blair, during Family Weekend instead of Chris Matthews because of an "overriding professional engagement" that caused Matthews to cancel, according to KPU Director Taylor Robinson.

Di's death through Queen's eyes

Stephen Frears' new film about the royal family is many things, but most of all it is fittingly majestic. "The Queen" focuses on the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, shown through the experiences of Queen Elizabeth (Helen Mirren) and a wavering, newly-elected Prime Minister Tony Blair, and whether the beloved princess should have a public or private display of grief with the trials of a modernizing government.

Style Network refurbishes Anderson lounge

The first floor lounge of Anderson Hall was remodeled over the weekend and revealed to the public yesterday by a team of designers from a Style Network program who modeled it after a Los Angeles restaurant and lounge called Dolce. AU was invited to apply for the makeover by the show's producers, who wanted to feature a D.

Bringing Their 'A' Game: Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon on "The Departed"

"Cops or criminals, when you're facing a loaded gun, what's the difference?" That's the tagline for Martin Scorsese's latest crime drama "The Departed," starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg. In this drama, an undercover cop (DiCaprio) infiltrates a Boston mob syndicate run by a man named Costello (Nicholson) while a criminal (Damon) infiltrates the state police.



Section 202 hosts Connor Sturniolo and Gabrielle McNamee are joined by fellow Eagle staff member and phenomenal sports photographer, Josh Markowitz. Follow along as they discuss the United Football League and the benefits it provides for the world of professional football.
