Prof attendance policy undefined

John Renga, a freshman in the College of Arts and Sciences, said two of his chemistry classes were canceled this semester simply because his professor didn't think chapter 13 in the course textbook was worth studying. "Don't show up for the next two classes," Renga said his professor announced one day.

Staff editorial: Dear faculty: Students' time is money, too

Though AU has a specific policy regarding professor attendance (including notification of department heads and finding substitutes or assigning make-up work), it is not well-publicized and a small amount of professors seem to be taking advantage of this. Undoubtedly, most professor absences are caused by unforseen circumstances like illness or family crises.

Mental health services lacking

Mike Evans has served in the U.S. Army, run for a seat in the House of Representatives and has been nominated to the Democratic National Committee's Veterans and Military Families Council by Howard Dean - all while coping with depression. But Evans, a senior in the Kogod School of Business, said it hasn't been easy, and universities - including AU - could do more to support students dealing with mental illness.

Frustrated elves vent on Christmas consumerism

It has been 14 Christmases since humorist David Sedaris first launched his career by reading "The Santaland Diaries" on National Public Radio, describing his less-than-jolly experience as a Macy's Christmas elf. The story, adapted for the stage, is a witty, sardonic, frequently outrageous, lovingly bitter and outright hilarious take on the holiday spirit.

WWII mystery filmed in classic style

Some moviegoers may feel like "The Good German" is an artificial recreation of classic film noir movies while others will let themselves become absorbed into the film's tense storyline. Nevertheless, "The Good German" boasts an impressive cast and a distinctly old-fashioned style that will teleport viewers to the past.

Letter to the editor

Dear Eagle Editorial Staff: I would like to respond to a recent article regarding AU's Mentorship Program. Interim Provost Ivy Broder has already set the record straight by indicating that she was misquoted in her remarks about the program. Beyond this, I wish to emphasize that the fortunate cohort of American University's first year students enrolled in the Mentorship Program are very fine students with average SAT scores of beyond 1200.

Lumps of coal for heart, soul

We continued the evening by attending a holiday party, aptly named "All I Want for Christmas is BOOZE," wearing only jeans, scarves and Santa hats.
