Student film an 'Uncanny Affair'

On Sunday night, the Davenport Lounge screened independent student films to a full house. Lizzy Lynch, a senior in the School of International Service, said the screenings occur "when people want to use the [Davenport] as a venue." The Lounge, she said, tries to "provide a space for creative expression.

Va. law prevents expulsion for suicide attempts

The Virginia state legislature passed an amendment that would prevent colleges and universities in Virginia from expelling students who attempt to commit suicide. AU has no policy on suicide and reviews each case of attempted suicide or self-inflicted harm individually, according to AU's Dean of Students Faith Leonard,.

'Midsummer' ballet not quite dream come true

The New York City Ballet performed "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at the Kennedy Center this week as part of the Center's "Shakespeare in Washington" series, which runs through July. The plot follows the travails of four mortal lovers who happen to cross paths on their way to true love in an enchanted forest.

Iowan Americana: music for the soul

There is a hush that comes over the crowd as William Elliot Whitmore takes the stage. He is alone, with only his guitar, banjo and glass of whiskey. The audience is mainly dressed in skinny jeans and sneakers, mixed with an older, bar-going crowd. By the fourth song, Whitmore has captivated his audience and nearly everyone is clapping, stomping and whistling as he croons "Johnny Law.

Various Artists "Play" (DeSoto) Sounds Like: Songs your mom would have played for you if she was on LSD instead of Valium and dated Shel Silverstein. Grade: A "Play" is one of many twisted children's music albums to be released in the past year - twisted in that the intended audience is not necessarily children of a certain age but still children, even the ones at heart.

Independent Film Festival is an award-winning festival that showcases world-premiere films, award-winning features, shorts, animation and documentaries by local, national and international filmmakers.

AU Symphony Orchestra impresses with Tchaikovsky

This past weekend, the American University Symphony Orchestra performed its first concert of the spring semester in the Abramson Family Recital Hall at the Katzen Arts Center. The concert featured the AUSO 2006-2007 Concerto and Aria Competition cowinners Laura Petravage and Josiah Lambert, as well as the debut of guest conductor Anna Binneweg.

Campus brief: AU honored for environmental projects

The National Wildlife Federation honored AU for innovative conservation projects that achieve "especially ambitious conservation goals," according to a university press release. The honor came in the 17th annual edition of the National Wildlife Federation's "Campus Ecology Yearbook" and highlighted 48 campus projects that focus on conservation and sustainability, with nine receiving special recognition, the press release said.

Anna Binneweg made her debut this weekend as guest conductor for the American University Symphony Orchestra. But there was nothing in the background of this current music director and conductor of the Anne Arundel Community College Orchestra to suggest this would be her future occupation.

My "biggest problem" was overselling Barack Obama; my "greatest mistake" was underselling the Republican field. National brief: Associated Press bans Paris Hilton news for one week

The Associated Press reported Friday that it instituted a week-long ban on news relating to celebrity hotel heiress Paris Hilton beginning Feb. 19. While the news agency admitted nothing "too out-of-the-ordinary happened in the Hilton universe" during the self-imposed blackout, it did not report on the ejection of one of Hilton's friends from a birthday party held at a Beverly Hills, Calif.

Multitasking impedes schoolwork

While multitasking has become a way of life for young people today, it can also be a distraction when it comes to schoolwork, according to several AU students. Multitasking affects the brain's learning systems, which results in people being unable to learn when distracted, according to University of California Los Angeles psychologists on the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences' Web site.

SG Vote: Your guide to Student Government elections

Today and tomorrow, AU students will able to elect Student Government executives electronically through their my.american.edu portals. This election, there are only two contested executive races: secretary and president. The executive hopefuls made appearances before various campus groups over the weekend to try and win their endorsements.


Anna Baran and the Eagles have a chance for the program's first Patriot League title.

Tears of joy and despair for Eagles basketball

The AU women's basketball team swept both games they played this weekend to advance to the Patriot League championship game. The Eagles will travel on the road to take on Holy Cross Wednesday night for the right to go to the Women's NCAA tournament. AU 68, Navy 55 In the quarterfinal game, the fourth-ranked Eagles faced off against the fifth-ranked Navy Midshipmen, who hosted the first two rounds of the PL tournament.

Club educates about organ donation

AU's new chapter of Students for Organ Donation's main objective as a student-run nonprofit is promoting awareness of organ donation, which the founders of the club say is an underdiscussed topic. The club was co-founded by AU undergraduate students Bridget Burke and Courtney Jones with Anastasia Snelling as faculty advisor, and was officially recognized as a university organization in January.

SG strengthens academic integrity

The Undergraduate Senate met Sunday to discuss its recommendations on revisions to the Academic Integrity Code and to vote on two resolutions and an unrelated bill supporting federal funding for AU. The Senate was joined by an Academic Integrity Code working group that has met regularly over the past few years to evaluate the AIC and improve AIC procedures that are problematic or not formally addressed.
