Today marks the launch of AU's student-run radio station, WVAU. Unlike most college radio programs, WVAU is an Internet station, which brings an equivalent amount of pros and cons to the table. On the positive side, as an Internet station, anybody in the world with access to the World Wide Web can tune into WVAU.

The people are the problem

Not a day goes by that I don't hear someone complain about the government. More popular than baseball, complaining about the government is perhaps our true national pastime. And why not? There is never any shortage of material, never a lack of hypocrisy to decry or underhanded maneuvering to look down on.

Men's soccer succeeds in first two home games

In its home opening games Friday and Sunday, the AU men's soccer team crushed opponents in a double win against Princeton University and Bowling Green. The Eagles started its 2-0 domination over the Princeton Tigers early into its Friday game. The intensity level and persistence was strong as AU attempted 10 shots past the Princeton keeper, including a shot by freshman Jamie Davin that hit the crossbar.

Appointment process needs 'fresh eyes'

Student Government insider Cait Douglas was appointed as acting secretary of the SG this week, beginning a period of transition following Alex Manzanares' resignation last Wednesday. Douglas, a former Eagle reporter covering the SG beat, has served as one of President Joe Vidulich's chiefs of staff this semester and has already begun to assume many of Manzanares' duties, such as writing press releases and editing the SG Welcome Week magazine.

Students volunteer in efforts to help Peru quake victims

Several AU students volunteered at the Peruvian Embassy during the last week of August to aid in disaster relief efforts following an earthquake that occurred in Lima, Peru, Aug. 15. The earthquake had a magnitude of 8.0 on the Richter scale, killed at least 540 people and injured at least 1,500, according to The Associated Press.

AU to fund undergrad research

AU will begin funding undergraduate research projects this semester through three new programs, Interim Provost Ivy Broder told members of the Faculty Senate during its meeting Wednesday. The programs make up the university's first centralized effort to offer grant money for undergraduate research, Broder said.

Venue celebrates 14 years of music

Tonight, the Black Cat will party like it's 1993 as the staff and friends of what could easily be called the District's most beloved venue celebrate its 14th birthday. Though young by the District's historic standards, the club is accomplished beyond its years, having provided independent artists an outlet for their music.

Volleyball undergoes another hard weekend

The AU Eagles women's volleyball team lost its sixth straight match on Saturday, falling to the University of North Carolina 3-2 during the UNC Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C. The loss was the Eagles' third in the past two days, following a pair of 3-1 losses to Villanova earlier that day and Western Kentucky on Friday afternoon.

Douglas serves as acting secretary

Student Government President Joe Vidulich appointed Cait Douglas, one of his chiefs of staff, as acting secretary of the SG after Alex Manzanares, a sophomore in the School of Communication, resigned last week. "She's been doing a lot of publicity stuff for a lot of different departments," Vidulich said.

Union debate lacks middle ground

It is almost pathetic that most AU students, not to mention some of us at The Eagle, were oblivious to the bus drivers' union AU workers formed in October 2006. Despite the massive legal battle that persists today, only a few campus organizations have voiced their dissatisfaction with AU's handling of the unionization process.

The Undergraduate Senate passed "A Bill to Restrict Privileges, Perks and Other Favors Granted Specifically for the Benefit of Members of the Student Government" with a 9-3 vote and one abstention, at Sunday's meeting. The bill, sponsored by College of Arts and Sciences Senator Peter Wahlberg, "attempts to underpin, with an ethical basis, the work that we do" by prohibiting exclusive programming and events and requiring "that they be, at least in theory, open to everyone," Wahlberg said.

This summer, the Washington College of Law's Pence Law Library received interior renovations and alterations, according to an article published in American Today. The changes included reconfiguring the library's space, replacing old furniture, and modernizing its aesthetics, American Today reported.

AU Eagles keep perfect 4-0 record

The AU Eagles women's soccer team registered another win on Sunday, defeating Buffalo 3-0 in the Niagara Fall Classic. The win was the Eagles' second of this weekend following a 2-1 advance over Niagara on Friday. Sophomore Kelsey Brasher started the scoring for the Eagles in Friday's game against Niagara.

Drivers attempt to unionize

AU Solidarity plans to launch a campaign this week to raise awareness for the shuttle bus drivers' attempts to unionize, according to Natalie Harris, a sophomore in the School of Communication and a member of AU Solidarity. The Undergraduate Senate will vote next Sunday on a resolution in support of the drivers.

Osama Bin Laden has invited Americans to "embrace Islam" as a means to prevent further attacks, in a video released days before the sixth year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. The al-Qaeda leader also mocked President Bush, comparing him to "one who plows and sows the sea: he harvests nothing but failure," according to The Associated Press.
