I was very excited to attend the AFRICOM panel in hopes to hear some comprehensive coverage and discussion. This never happened. First and foremost, there was significant talk of the U.S. military. However, I did not see anyone with any background in the military.

Senate passes bill endorsing creation of women's center The Undergraduate Senate Sunday passed a bill endorsing the creation of a Women's Resource Center during its last meeting of the semester Sunday. The bill, which passed 21-2-3, requires SG President Joe Vidulich to lobby the administration in support of a proposal by Women's Initiative Director Vanessa Mueller to create the center.

Courage leads to adventure in Beirut

When I tell people that I was recently in Beirut, they generally say it was brave of me to go. To be honest, I'm really a chicken. If I had known there was going to be a constitutional crisis in Lebanon while I was there, I never would have bought my plane tickets from Istanbul, where I am studying abroad, to Beirut.

Eagles pinned down by Hawks

The wrestling team Sunday night lost its home opening dual meet 27-15 to the Lehigh University Mountain Hawks in Bender Arena. The Eagles dropped the first three matches of the night. No. 14 ranked David Craig of Lehigh began the meet with a 15-0 technical fall in the 184-pound division, giving the Hawks an early 5-0 lead.

Genre-bending MC burns up 9:30 club

Any artist who performs at the 9:30 club typically thanks the audience - the people of D.C. M.I.A., the multigenre, London-based rapper, chanted additional shout-outs to the CIA and FBI, organizations that once assisted in banning her entry into the United States and preventing her from returning to her Brooklyn apartment.

Ward 3 boasts lowest AIDS rate

Ward 3, where AU is located, had the lowest incidence of newly diagnosed AIDS and HIV cases in D.C. from 2001 to 2006, according to a report recently released by the D.C. Department of Health. The report, which was released Nov. 26 to coincide with World AIDS Day 2007, is the first data gathered on HIV in D.

The volleyball team lost on Friday night to Duke University in the first round of the NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament, bringing a long season of success to a close. Rubena Sukaj continued her outstanding play with her 11th double-double of the season, scoring 22 kills and digging a team-high 13 balls.

Group collects books for D.C. jails

Justice Not Jails, an AU prison activism group, collected more than 500 books in a book drive this semester to expand the libraries in all wings in the D.C. Department of Corrections, according to Ava Page, a member of the group. The group's goal is to use initiatives such as rehabilitation centers, affordable housing and education to mobilize convicted criminals rather than sending them to prison.

Thai politician accused of raising votes with Viagra An unidentified candidate for Thailand's parliamentary elections in December may have used Viagra to court elderly male voters at social functions, a campaign worker told the Bangkok Post Friday. "The politician is giving out Viagra to gain popularity and votes," said Sayan Nopcha, a campaign worker for the People's Power Party based north of Bangkok in Pathum Thai province.

Men's basketball ends two-game winning streak to UMBC, 83-68

The men's basketball team was back on their home court Saturday afternoon when they ended its two-game winning streak in a disappointing 83-68 loss to the University of Maryland Baltimore County. The UMBC Retrievers stepped onto the floor with precision and execution as they quickly went on a 7-0 run in the first two minutes of the game.

Pedestrian deaths in 2007 highest in 10 years The death of a 26-year-old man crossing a street Friday morning made the number of pedestrian deaths this year the highest since 1997, according to the D.C. Department of Transportation. A day later, a hit-and-run driver fatally struck a woman, raising the total to 25 deaths.

Women's basketball gains home win

The women's basketball team defeated the Western Michigan Broncos 65-61 Saturday night in Bender Arena. On their first possession, the Eagles opened the scoring with a basket from senior Stephanie N'Garsanet. The team quickly went on to gain a 10-4 lead.
