Op-Ed: Bush's address stirs no debate

·

Unlike many of my fellow Democrats, I have lot of sympathy for President Bush. I was encouraged when he first ran for president in 2000 as a "compassionate conservative." Contrary to what many believe, I have found Bush's political philosophy to encompass a lot of "liberal" elements: government-sponsored social programs, commitment to global democracy, tolerant policies toward immigration, etc.

Op-Ed: Obama offers all but real change

Imagine this: Before the 2008 election, the devil appears at a meeting between Democratic and Republican leaders and presidential hopefuls. Now imagine that the devil makes a deal with the first politician - the prize is guaranteed party power and unity for the next 50 years, and the price is the cost of one single American life.

AU Players teach American history lesson

In a time when many are focused on the future of America, the AU Players take a step backward and look at the history of America through their first performance of the semester, "The Complete History of America (Abridged)." An odd crowd gathered to see an equally odd lineup when the Super Furry Animals, known for their progressive power-pop, played the 9:30 club Sunday night. The floor was surprisingly packed for an early show, but the swarm that assembled appeared to be equally as intrigued by SFA as it was with backup help from electronic post-punkers Holy Fuck and eclectic indie rockers, The Fiery Furnaces.

Letter to the editor

I suspect there will be videos surfacing on YouTube from the endorsement of Sen. Obama by Edward Kennedy. Although, considering the cynicism of those who use and post on YouTube with regularity, I suspect the tenor of that post will not elevate or celebrate the magnitude of the "momentous occasion.

Staff editorial: AU's Social Security blunder

Let's be blunt: There's absolutely no excuse for the university's mishandling of students' Social Security numbers in the McKinley Building. The boxes, which an AU student found last week next to containers filled with trash, had been sitting in the hallway for an unspecified amount of time, with only a piece of printer paper protecting students' personal information from misuse.
