Lovely tunes for Love Day

Holidays are cause for revelry and music. Valentine's Day music, though, can be rather exclusionary for those without someone special. Fear not! The Scene has compiled a list for the Valentine-d and un-Valentine-d among you.

For those with a Valentine

"Murphy Bed" - Mirah

Mirah can sing sweetly about anything, and sadomasochism is no exception. If you've been trying to convince your loved one to try something new, the songstress' sweet sounds might help them work their magic. What better Valentine's gift than a little sexual experimentation?

"Such Great Heights" - The Postal Service

Look, you weren't the only one who felt "Garden State" ruined "Such Great Heights" for. But come on, "I think that it's a sign that the freckles in our eyes are mirror images, and when we kiss, they're perfectly aligned?" That's poetry you rarely hear in a song. At least the Postal Service version is peppy.

"The Luckiest" - Ben Folds

Ben Folds is an amazing man, and "The Luckiest" is about his amazing woman and what she means to him. This sweet song might be just the way to tell your Valentine how you feel.

"Chick-a-boom" - Van Morrison

"Brown Eyed Girl" is what most people think of when they hear Van Morrison. "Chick-a-boom" has the same toe-tapping beat, but with a more meaningful message. Ladies: Would you rather have some guy talk about how your eyes are brown, or the way you swish and sway in that yellow dress? Gentlemen: Keep this in mind when wooing your Valentine.

"If She Wants Me" - Belle and Sebastian

No one ever said your Valentine had to be your lover. How about the love of your life? This Belle and Sebastian song is a good reminder that sometimes your best friend is the most important person in your life and the best person to spend any holiday with.

For those without a Valentine

"Dancing with Myself" - Billy Idol

Billy Idol isn't an idol for nothing. The man is a role model for the dateless everywhere. If you can't dance with a date, why not dance alone? So "why don't you sink another drink, it'll give you time to think and if you have a chance, you can ask the world to dance." Why be exclusive when you can dance with the whole world?

"She Bop" - Cyndi Lauper

Some have said that "Dancing with Myself" is about, you know, that "other" dance you do with yourself. While that may be disputable, it's hard to say that Cyndi Lauper's "She Bop" is about anything but masturbation. You may already be aware that The Scene condones self-gratification, and what better time to show a little love than Valentine's Day - alone.

"Smile" - Lily Allen

It doesn't matter what you think of Lily Allen - this pop-y, upbeat song will make you "Smile." Allen's song highlights that sometimes it's just plain better to be single.

"The KKK Took My Baby Away" - Ramones

Contrary to popular belief, the KKK did not take Joey Ramone's baby away. The KKK is a metaphor for Johnny Ramone, who, in fact, stole and then married Joey's girlfriend Linda. What's better revenge than forcing your two-timing bandmate to play a song that refers to him as a clandestine racist organization in a thinly veiled metaphor? Listen to that song on repeat when you're feeling sad and alone. OK, maybe don't do that, but only Joey Ramone can be that awesome.

"Boys Don't Cry" - The Cure

Every single person's Valentine's Day playlist needs a song by the Cure. That's a fact. Sure, it might be about a bad break up, and sure Robert Smith might tell you his laughter is really just hiding tears. But if you're going to have a Cure song, you might as well have one that, at face value, tells you not to cry.
