The San Jose Sharks have Claude Lemieux, Calgary has Todd Bertuzzi and the Capitals have Donald Brashear. All three of these players are enforcers or big men. They are on the ice for one purpose, to hit people. For the last three years, Brashear has filled that role for the Washington Capitals.

Students adapt Israel plans

The conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip has created headaches for AU students planning to study abroad in Israel. Although a cease-fire was declared Sunday, the conflict has caused some of the students who intend to study in Israel to have second thoughts.

Defense class now offered for men

Public Safety has instituted its first self-defense class for men, in response to several requests, according to Public Safety Sgt. Dale Booth. Resisting Aggression with Defense (for men) came in response to e-mails to Booth, who is the RAD program's former director, he said.

U.S. needs to move past '08 campaign

Political pundits have offered up a myriad of reasons for newly inaugurated President Barack Obama's victory in November's election - the economic crisis, plummeting public support for George W. Bush, concerns about the Republican ticket and so on. While I'm sure any number of factors played a role in the Obama-Biden ticket's victory, it's undeniable that the ticket's campaign staff deserve some of the credit for executing a highly effective campaign marketing strategy.

School of Communication alumnus Dan Lothian has been named as CNN's White House correspondent, according to an AU press release. Lothian, who graduated from the SOC graduate program in 1988, worked for the "Today Show" and "NBC Nightly News" before turning to the CNN network.

Everyone's getting a little tired of all this hope and change everywhere. Sometimes you just want things to be, you know, unhistoric. So The Scene compiled a list of the best parts of the end of Inaug. 10) Pandas are cuter than Barack Obama Sure, Barack's skin is fantastic (his pores are invisible!), but we still maintain that pandas are cuter.

Male RAD class needs retooling

Public Safety will begin offering a male counterpart to the Rape Aggression Defense class starting next week, after several AU students showed interest in a male equivalent. The class, called Resisting Aggression with Defense, focuses on teaching males to walk away from confrontation rather than resort to violence.

AU serves on MLK

This Monday, then President-elect Barack Obama called the nation to serve in honor of the life of Martin Luther King Jr. In response, one of the largest groups ever volunteered for the AU Community Service Center's (CSC) annual MLK Day of Service at four senior housing and aid sites in D.C.


SLAMMIN' IT HOME-Senior forward Brian Gilmore (No. 14) finishes a slam-dunk in a recent Eagles' game this season, as No. 15 Frank Borden and No. 3 Garrison Carr look on.  Gilmore had 28 points in the AU's win over the Colgate Raiders on Saturday.

Gilmore, Eagles claw Raiders

Senior forward Brian Gilmore scored a career-high 28 points, including 18 in the first half alone, to lead the AU men's basketball team to their sixth-straight victory, 79-49, over Colgate University Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Eagles' record to 11-6 on the season and a perfect 3-0 in the Patriot League.

Fifteen bonnethead sharks died overnight and were found in their tank at the Indianapolis Zoo Tuesday, according to TheIndyChannel.com. An excess of ozone in the tank caused the deaths, according to zoo veterinarians. Ozone is used to dissolve organic waste in the tank.

The recently opened exhibit "Accommodating Nature: The Photographs of Frank Gohlke" at the American Art Museum showcases the artist's evocative black and white commentary on the American landscape. From his Texan roots to his later exploration of the Northeast, the subjects of his work are familiar and geographically diverse.

No. 3 Cannon, No. 12 Borshoff lead wrestling

No. 3 redshirt junior 174-pound class Mike Cannon and No. 12 junior 149-pound class Kyle Borshoff helped pace the AU wrestling team to a 3-1 duel record over the weekend. The team defeated the U.S. Naval Academy on Friday before beating Clarion University and Gardner-Webb University at the Indiana Duels Sunday.

Unlike many people who attended President Barack Obama's inauguration Tuesday, University of Maryland student Jameel Spriggs woke up at 9 a.m. - hours after many had already arrived at the National Mall. Over 160 miners survived for more than a day trapped in a mile-deep South African gold mine, CNN.com reported. Six of the 167 trapped miners were hospitalized for smoke inhalation following their rescue Sunday from the Blyvoor No. 5 mine owned by Drdgold.

Letter to the editor: Past political cartoon is "infuriatingly close-minded"

The cartoon in last week's edition of an Israeli family cowering under missile-heads labeled "Hamas" and "Global Anti-Semitism" is infuriatingly close-minded and stubborn. I understand political cartoons are meant to be divisive and show the single-sided stories of a bitter or oppressed populace (Republicans denounce Democrats, Dems blame the GOP, the Liberal Left reprimands the Christian Right, the U.
