HELP FOR  HAITI — School of International Service Professor Robert Pastor served as a senior adviser during former President Jimmy Carter’s 1994 trip to Haiti. Pastor says that unlike most countries he has worked to develop, Haiti remains the most difficult to help.

Honors adjusts to move

University Honors Program director Michael Mass spoke about the recent Housing and Dining announcement that the Honors program would move to Hughes Hall.




FRESH START — AU’s chapter of Sigma Alpha Mu, or “SAMMY,” is now officially recognized as a colony. The fraternity lost its charter in 2003 due to alcohol violations and administrative non-compliance. Chase Freeman, a freshman, has taken over as president.

‘SAMMY’ gains colony status

AU’s chapter of Sigma Alpha Mu – better known as “SAMMY” – lost its charter in 2003. After seven years of unofficial activity, the fraternity regained official status this semester, according to Director of Greek Life, Curtis Burrill. It joined Zeta Psi and Tau Kappa Epsilon as a colony on campus.

Uncle Sam and the red ink sea

My first days as an intern on Capitol Hill were marked by the unheralded tasks familiar to any newcomer to the House of Representatives: sorting mail, distributing faxes to aides and answering phone calls from district constituents. As expected, many of the conversations were dominated by the everyday concerns of middle-class citizens struggling through an economic downturn. What surprised me, however, was the volume of appeals insisting on more Medicare protection, expanded health care coverage or increased security to stem the flow of illegal immigrants.
