AU student stands in for Mrs. Bush

She will not appear on an episode of "The West Wing" as Mrs. Bartlet, but Sally Renfro, a junior in College of Arts Sciences, was playing the role of the real first lady for the cameras of NBC on Friday morning before the inauguration. Renfro was recruited by friend and fellow AU student Kate Black, a senior in the School of Communication, who was serving as a runner for NBC's pool coverage of the Inauguration.

President Bush decides to remove D.C. tags from limousine

As one of the first controversial actions of the days-old Bush administration, the new president removed his limousine's "Taxation Without Representation" license plates - a move made by Clinton to show support for the District's full voting rights. Bush told The Associated Press last week that the tags will be replaced with special 2001 inaugural tags issued by the city, citing no interest in using license plates to make a political statement.

Organization lobbies for youth debate in presidential election

Seventy-seven percent of all voters support making one of the three presidential debates a youth-focused event, a recent poll taken by Third Millennium, in conjunction with the nationwide program Youth Vote 2000, indicated. The poll, administered by a branch of Third Millennium entitled Neglection 2000, also showed that if this debate were to occur, there would be a significant increase in voter turnout by all age groups.

Ice cream coffee shop to replace Blue Mountain

Wagshal's Coffee and Ice Cream Caf? will move into the space formerly occupied by Blue Mountain Coffee later this semester, Auxilary Services announced Friday. Sunny Day Real Estate

Before addressing Sunny Day Real Estate's newest creation, let's take a moment to speculate. Why is the band's fourth album titled "The Rising Tide?" Is it a homage to the mystery and sublime nature of the ocean - which, using one' s imagination, could be a metaphor for love, one of frontman Jeremy Enigh's favorite subjects? Is it a veiled reference to the sad state of problems in the world, which Enigh also addresses in his songs? Or does it just allude to the odd fashion of the emo music scene (in which Sunny Day Real Estate is popular), where high-water pants are all the rage? Perhaps the first two speculations are correct, but the third is doubtful - Sunny Day's melancholy music doesn't leave much room for humor, and "The Rising Tide" is its most despondent album yet.

D.C. students use AU more than suspected

Though AU students spend a great deal of time complaining about their lack of library resources, other schools in the area seem more than happy to use Bender Library as a supplement to their studies. "America's Game" recruited contestants at AU on Friday for the show's first visit to the Nation's Capital.
