Metro brief: Former D.C. mayor faces possible jail time

D.C. Council Member and former mayor Marion Barry, Jr. faces possible jail time after pleading guilty Friday to two misdemeanor charges of failing to file tax returns, according to the Washington Examiner. Barry acknowledged he did not file or pay taxes to the Internal Revenue Service or the District on roughly $534,000 in salary between 1999 and 2004.

"Grand Theft Auto" maker angers Brits with new game British Parliament member Keith Vaz last week protested "Grand Theft Auto" developer Rockstar Games' upcoming new title, "Bully," in which players can beat up fellow school children. According to BBC News, Vaz suggested to the House of Commons that the game should go before the British Board of Film Classification.

Vice pres. chief of staff indicted

Vice President Dick Cheney's Chief of Staff I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby scooted out of the White House permanently on Friday after being indicted on five counts of perjury and obstruction of justice in the Valerie Plame leak case. Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald also extended the term of the Grand Jury and will continue his investigation.

Letts RHA treats kids to Halloween

Despite a major transportation mishap, about 20 children from the D.C. metro area came to AU to celebrate Halloween with Letts Hall resident assistants and student volunteers. The three-hour event was held in the Letts Game and Recreation Center and nine different lounges throughout the building.

Staff editorial: No security threats on campus network

The Federal Government is requiring all Internet service providers and institutions that provide Internet access to upgrade their technology to broadband that can be monitored for security reasons. AU would have to spend an estimated $3 million on the federally mandated upgrades since it provides Internet access to students, faculty and staff.

AU: No need to restrict military recruitment

Not one to follow issues of the Graduate Leadership Council very closely, I was surprised to see that legislation had been passed on Wednesday, Oct. 5, which would effectively ban military recruiters from the AU campus, based on the "discriminatory" policies of the US military toward those who are openly gay.

Pests seen crawling campus, dorms

Students at American University have reported seeing rats, cockroaches or other vermin around campus, but are divided on whether the issue is a major problem facing AU. "Western Pest Services is on campus every Tuesday and Friday to perform routine inspections of common areas on campus both on the grounds and inside buildings," said Stephanie DeStefano, Grounds Operations coordinator for AU.

Field hockey players get PL, national honors AU field hockey freshman attacker Irene Schickhardt was named the Patriot League's Rookie of the Week for her play in last week's action. She netted a hat trick in AU's 3-2 overtime win at Holy Cross on Saturday.

NHL on OLN is no-see TV

This should have been a fantastic season for NHL fans. Sidney "The Next One" Crosby is skating alongside the legendary Mario Lemieux in Pittsburgh, while Jaromir Jagr has regained his scoring touch in New York (10 goals in 10 games). A crackdown on obstruction and a reduction in the size of goaltending equipment has improved the offensive flow of the game.
