SG passes bill for cage-free hen eggs

The Undergraduate Senate passed a bill yesterday encouraging Bon Appetit, AU's on-campus food service, to stop using eggs from hens confined in battery-cages and completely switch to cage-free eggs by Feb. 1, 2006. The sponsor of the bill, Zo Tobi, along with representatives from AU Animal Rights Effort, told the Senate that battery-cages are inhumane.

President Kerwin speaks about life, future, Ladner

After nearly 40 years as an AU student, professor, dean and most recently provost, Neil Kerwin is now serving the university as acting president and is actively working to continue growth and development plans for the school, as well as repair damaged relationships following a period of scandal and turmoil surrounding former President Benjamin Ladner.

Staff editorial: Urban ed. initiatives will help D.C. youth

The superintendent of the D.C. public school system spoke on campus this past week about intiatives aimed at improving education in a city with one of the worst school districts in the country. The overarching goal of the plan is to put more qualified teachers into schools, as well as critiquing the teaching methods of current instructors to seach for ways to improve.

1. Hot Doggs Rapper Snoop Dogg recently signed a deal with Platinum One Media to create a new line of foot-long hot dogs endorsed by the celebrity. "Snoop Doggs" are being made in Massachusetts and will hit stores in January. In other Dogg news, Snoop has a new film called "Boss'n Up" coming out Dec.

Salazar memorial service packs Kay to capacity

The 280-seat Kay Spiritual Life Center was packed to standing room only capacity for a memorial service honoring the life of Class of 2005 President Chris Salazar Thursday evening. Salazar died last week after falling from a fourth-floor balcony at his apartment in NW D.

NYU graduate assistants strike, disrupt 400 classes

Graduate assistants at New York University went on strike Nov. 9 after the university refused to renegotiate the GAs' union contract, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education. In 2004 the National Labor Relations Board ruled that federal labor laws did not cover graduate assistants.

Teaching assistants at New York University are entering their third week of striking for federal labor protections. The National Labor Relations board ruled last year that graduate assistants were not entitled to union protection , and therefore the benefits the university should provide.

Educators called to seek evaluation, national certification

Challenging educators to turn a critical lens on themselves, review their teaching style and strive for the highest accreditation in their field, members of the D.C. public school system, AU faculty members and local educators gathered at the Kay Spiritual Life Center Thursday to discuss the importance of receiving National Board certification, an honor bestowed upon exemplary educators by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Documentary on Iraq makes premier at AU

Last Thursday, the AU Foreign Policy Association and the Capitol Conservatives hosted the D.C. premiere of "Confronting Iraq: Conflict and Hope," a new documentary that focused on showing justification for the present war. About 80 people attended the event, many of who were from the local and national media.

Five-game thriller leads to fifth PL championship

There are two lessons a person would take away from the Patriot League Volleyball Tournament: Never underestimate the heart of a champion and never count out AU in a match no matter how big the deficit. In two straight matches, AU came back from within a game of elimination to earn its fifth straight Patriot League title and trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Suspenseful new 'Harry Potter' film is franchise's best

Wow. Under the guidance of Mike Newell, the Harry Potter franchise continues its dark descent from children's fantasy to more adult-oriented entertainment. The act of compressing a 734-page novel into a two-and-a-half-hour film is no small feat, but the cast and crew of "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" have done an admirable job.

Simulated battle a real 'bang'

Editor's Note: Eagle contributing writer Max Kopper traded in his civilian duds for camouflage gear on Nov. 5 and 6 to be an "embedded" reporter with the Georgetown Reserve Officers' Training Corps, or ROTC, program during a training exercise in Virginia.
