I am a Democrat. And I am pro-life. I see no contradiction between these two statements. In fact, I consider sanctity of life as a foundation to the progressive vision of the Democratic Party. Progressives have long fought for workers' rights, seniors' rights, women's rights and minority rights. Is it not only a logical extension that progressives should then advocate justice for the unborn infants?

I am a Democrat. And I am pro-life. I see no contradiction between these two statements. In fact, I consider sanctity of life as a foundation to the progressive vision of the Democratic Party. When 19th century capitalism justified social oppression as "survival of the fittest," progressives spoke up, advocating social justice and fundamental rights of all individuals. For this reason progressives have long fought for workers' rights, seniors' rights, women's rights and minority rights. Is it not only a logical extension that progressives should then advocate justice for the unborn infants?

Every political party has its loyal base. As generally the most active and generous party supporters, the base expects much from the party leadership. Often, however, the party finds itself in a strategic dilemma when the will of its base seems to contradict the will of the majority of non-base voters. For the past 12 years, the Democrats were outmaneuvered by the Republicans in handling this strategic dilemma and thus subjected to treatment as a minority party.

First of all, let me begin by saying I am a "Fox News Liberal." While I am certainly a loyal Democrat, I also have high respect for the Grand Old Party. I have regularly attended conservative conferences and seminars, including the famous CPAC. I believe the modern United States benefits from the historical achievements of many dedicated Republicans, from Abraham Lincoln to George Bush, Sr.

Only a day before the fall election, I look optimistically toward the result. It is hard to believe that the tide of politics has changed so much from two years ago. When 2005 began, the Republicans were in control of the White House, Congress and a majority of gubernatorial offices. The Democrats appeared to be locked down as a permanent minority party. Now, there is a huge national discontent against the Republican government in all directions: economy, foreign policy and even on moral values (due to the Foley scandal). While the traditional GOP base is demoralized, the Democratic base is very provoked and motivated to vote. Surging on the voter's thirst for change, the Democrats will make gains in every part of the nation.

"I've had enough of folks who act tough on TV. I want someone who really is tough when it comes to our foreign policy," roared Sen. Barack Obama at a rally in Virginia last month. Sure enough, in this election the Democratic Party is sending a number of veterans frustrated with the current Bush administration to key races, challenging the notion that the party is soft on national security.

Exactly five years ago, the United States was attacked by a group of professional terrorists. Initially in shock, the nation quickly responded with anger and vigor. President Bush declared a "War on Terror" and used the might of the U.S. military to attack or threaten any global elements perceived to be hostile to the security of the United States, such as the "Axis of Evil." Despite much controversy, the Bush administration launched a pre-emptive strike on Iraq with the strong conviction that the overthrow of Saddam Hussein would weaken the support of terrorist organizations and bring stability to the Middle East.

"I have earned a political capital, and I intend to spend it," said a confident President Bush in his second inauguration speech.

As an evangelical Democrat, I am perfectly aware of how for the past couple decades, the GOP successfully employed millions of evangelical voters as its foot soldiers by capturing the ultimate moral high ground, the sanctity of life. Some Democrats have tried to respond by bringing the GOP down, pointing out that the military hawkish, pro-death penalty party is inconsistent in its pro-life ethics. While this may be true, I feel strongly that the Democrats also have to start climbing up and capture the moral high ground for themselves.

I have a dream. I have a dream that one day, the voice of the ethnic minorities will be heard and represented in all political parties, whether it is red, green, or blue. For years, there were promises from the GOP that it would once again uphold Lincoln's legacy and become the party of racial inclusion. This year, the GOP finally appears to be putting real substance behind their promise, recruiting several Afro-Americans to run for competitive political races.

Many times the elections are won because of the opposition's blunders. As I intently watch the development of the 06 election, I must say I am mystified and delighted with the apparent tactical blunder of the ideological wing of the GOP. I am not talking about the corruption that hit "The Hammer" and the Abramoff Scandal (Though they certainly hurt the GOP's reputation). I am talking about the schism inside their party, the conservatives' war against their own party members in the Congress.
