For D.C. residents, cherry blossoms have long symbolized the arrival of spring. In 1912 Yukio Ozaki, the then-mayor of Tokyo City, had 3,000 cherry trees planted in the District as a gift to the United States. One spring tradition that also has grown from the international relationship between the U.S. and Japan is the Cherry Blossom Princess Program, which this year selected American University student Alessandra Evangelista to be its queen.

American University’s chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine organized a campus-wide walkout on April 23 calling for the University to divest from ties to Israel.

As the encampment at George Washington University stretched into a fourth day, protesters tore down the barricade surrounding University Yard before bringing in some of the tents that had been set up on H Street. In a statement from GW’s Executive Director of Media Relations and University Spokesman Josh Grossman, it’s estimated that around 200 protesters joined the students’ encampment on University Yard.

American University students joined an encampment at George Washington University on the University Yard, along with students from other schools in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia area.

George Washington University students woke up this morning to an encampment of around 20 tents on the University Yard. By 10:30 a.m., an estimated 70 GW students had joined in calling for the university to divest from Israel. GWU Students for Justice in Palestine announced the encampment with DMV SJP on Thursday around 5 a.m., writing “rise and shine DMV” on an Instagram story and calling on other students across the D.C., Maryland and Virginia area to join.

Sunday’s vote calling for the University to divest from Israel wasn’t Student Government’s first action regarding student advocacy on the conflict in Gaza: a week prior, on April 14, the Senate unanimously voted to pass a resolution condemning American University’s decision to place AU Students for Justice in Palestine on disciplinary probation for violating the indoor protest ban.
