VAN, Turkey - The adventures of life have led me to Kurdistan (a region of Eastern Turkey) and I have fallen in love with the Kurdish people and culture. I and five of my friends from the American University in Cairo traveled to Turkey for Eid (the feast after Ramadan). We landed in Ankara, rented a minivan and drove along the Black Sea and Turkish border with Armenia and Georgia, toward Diyarbakir, a city in Kurdistan, a region in Turkey.

CAIRO, Egypt - Thousands of Egyptian soldiers dressed in black lined the streets of downtown Cairo Thursday morning. A shiver went down my spine as I realized Yasser Arafat died. Sitting in the back of a taxi, I wondered if I should speak to the driver, aware my American nationality could lead to a precarious situation. The driver pointed to the chaos on the street and said "President Mubarak will come." He was referring to the president of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak, and the entourage of Arab leaders who were meeting in Cairo to mourn the death of Arafat, the Palestinian leader who led the Palestinian Liberation Organization for almost half a century.

Muslim Scholar Akbar Ahmed and Dr. Judea Pearl engaged in their second interfaith dialogue on Jan. 20. The event, "Choosing Hope - A Dialogue in Search of Common Ground," was held at Harrison Auditorium, in the University of Pennsylvania's Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. It provided Pearl and Ahmed the opportunity to reach out and address the need for dialogue and understanding between Muslims and Jews.

The Society for Peace and Conflict Resolution held a forum titled "Reconstruction and Security: Roles and Challenges for Afghan Woman" on Thursday, Oct. 16. The forum was held in the School of International Service Lounge and highlighted the human rights abuses that women in Afghanistan are faced with and the role the United States needs to play in improving our policies on human rights.
