The AU men's basketball team hadn't beat Boston University since the 2014 Patriot League Tournament final. The four game losing streak ended last night, however, when the Eagles outlasted the Terriers for the 69-64 win to move on to the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament.

When AU and Loyola Maryland last met on Dec. 30, the Eagles were riding a four-game losing streak and held a 2-11 record. Two months later, the Eagles took the court as a completely different team. After a season which included a 10-game losing streak, a winless home game streak stretching three months and 0-6 start to Patriot League play, the Eagles ended with a 67-66 win over the Greyhounds, extending their winning streak to four and notching their ninth wins in the last 12 games.

After an unexpected five game win streak, AU reverted back to the underperforming team they were early in the season against the Lehigh Mountain Hawks in a game plagued by missed easy shots, long scoring droughts and flat defense. AU’s sixth game and third on the road in 11 days took a toll on the team, as the Eagles (7-16, 5-7 PL) played out-of-sync from the start. Lehigh raced out to a 10-0 advantage in the first four minutes, and the Eagles never recovered, eventually losing 72-49.

The last time AU faced off against Bucknell, in early January in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, the game wasn’t much of a contest. The Bison cruised to a 72-54 victory, and all but two Eagles were held to single-digit scoring while four Bison starters posted double-figure scoring performances. Last night, however, AU played like a completely different team, beating Bucknell 69-55 in Bender Arena.

In the second meet in as many days, the AU wrestling team was narrowly edged out by Drexel University 21-16. After a powerful start, AU lost its final five matches of the day, marking the second meet in the row that the final weight classes have under-performed.

The Eagles, plagued by unproductive offense and inexperienced defense, suffered their 14th loss of the season last night at the hands of Boston University. After a close-scoring first half, AU ultimately ran dry in the second half, losing 61-50 to its Patriot League foe.

Olympic champion Mark Spitz once said, “Life is true to form; records are meant to be broken,” and his phrase sums up the 2015 athletic season for the Eagles. AU captured two Patriot League championships and sent two teams and two individual athletes to the NCAA tournament. Four Eagles won Patriot League Scholar Athletes of the Year awards, and Athletic Director Billy Walker earned a place in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. AU made history in 2015, and The Eagle has compiled the highlights.

Michelle Holmes, one of only two seniors on the roster for the women’s basketball team, leads the Eagles in average minutes per game and points per game. The Ohio native scored a season-high 22 points against Wake Forest University on Nov. 29 and said she hopes to continue to lead the team to success this year. The Eagles have struggled in non-conference play so far this season, but the team hopes to start fresh with Patriot League games at the end of the month. Holmes sat down with The Eagle to talk about her changing role as a senior, the locker room mindset and how the team is working to improve. The Eagles play Loyola Maryland today at 4:30 p.m.

The Eagles remain winless at Bender Arena after a 79-64 loss to University of Maryland Eastern Shore Saturday afternoon. AU entered halftime leading 37-33, but second half defensive breakdowns and sloppy offensive turnovers handed University of Maryland Eastern Shore the win.

The Eagles failed to capture a win in Bender Arena after a month-long six-game road trip. After a strong start, AU proved unable to keep pace with the more athletic and aggressive Stony Brook University team. AU ended the game playing its second and third-string players and finished with a 86-68 loss to Stony Brook.

In the last two seasons, the AU men’s basketball team has seen the graduation of three of the best players in team history: Tony Wroblicky, John Schoof and Darius “Pee-Wee” Gardner. At the end of this season, the Eagles will graduate senior guard Jesse Reed, a two-time Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year who has already recorded 1,000 points in his AU career. Head coach Mike Brennan faces the challenge of rebuilding his team every year, and this year, Brennan and his and his team of assistants have brought in several nationally-acclaimed recruits in an effort to continue the team’s success.

For the 13th time in program history, the AU volleyball team can call themselves Patriot League champions. The Eagles advanced to the Patriot League final after a decisive three-set victory, 25-19, 25-19, 25-20, over Colgate. In the final, AU bested No. 2 seed Army Black Knights with a challenging three-set victory; 26-24, 25-17, 26-24.

AU entered Friday night’s match against Loyola University Maryland as the regular season Patriot League champions, but the team still sought an additional accomplishment: an undefeated season. After a 25-21, 25-10, 25-15 victory over the Greyhounds, AU became the first team in Patriot League history to record 16 regular-season league wins in a season. This year also marks the first time since 2010 that the Eagles have gone undefeated.

After facing a 2-0 deficit at halftime in the Patriot League finals, the Eagles field hockey team notched a single goal but proved unable to pull ahead of the Boston University Terriers and claim a league title. AU, a team that rallied back from a two-goal gap in the semifinals the day before, ended the season 5-1 in the Patriot League and 12-7 overall.

Fueled by a half time talk from head coach Todd West, AU pulled past Bucknell University on Saturday afternoon, scoring three goals in twelve minutes to earn another conference victory. The Eagles started slow, showing signs of the offensively stymied team who has scored only two goals in the last three games.

The Eagles headed to downtown D.C.to take on local rivals Howard University on Sept. 11. The AU women’s soccer team led for a 64 minutes, but was defeated 2-1 in overtime.
