American University’s student body voted this week to elect a new executive board, including presidential, vice presidential, comptroller and secretary seats. Additionally, the body voted to fill all seats in the Student Government Senate and class councils.
Carly Castaldy, a junior in the School of Public Affairs, has been elected as the next Student Government president for the 2026-2027 year. Castaldy will succeed Jeffrie Chambers IV. Chambers has held the presidential seat since spring 2025.
A total of 1,212 students cast their ballots for the spring 2026 election, an increase from the fall 2025 elections, where 850 students voted.
The ballot also presented voters with two referendums. The first set of questions asked if the University should implement 21-plus spaces on campus, as well as if alcoholic beverages should be allowed to be served during select on-campus events. The student body voted yes on all four questions pertaining to Referendum 21-2001.
Referendum 21-002 asked students if the University should raise the academic credit limit to 18 rather than 17.99. The referendum passed with a majority of students voting yes on each of the three questions posed.
Declared winners announced their campaigns to the Office of Elections, while write-in winners were not named on the ballot but will be asked to officially accept their position.
Not all voting totals add up to 100 percent due to circumstances where students did not cast votes for every position on the ballot. The presidential seat percentage is based on the final round of rank-choice voting.
