District Taco opens Tenleytown location

Students can head to Monday’s grand opening on Wisconsin Ave.

District Taco is prepared to open its new Tenleytown location at Wisconsin Avenue and Brandywine Street at 11 a.m. tomorrow.

Officials announced the location in early September 2015, and held its soft opening this past Saturday. District Taco staff set up the location mid-day Friday, and those who passed by eagerly peered through the windows to get a first look at the restaurant preparations.

As an incentive to visit during the District Taco grand opening, the location plans to donate 10 percent of earnings to benefit Friendship Place, a non profit working to fight homelessness. In addition, the first 50 customers will receive a District Taco goodie bag of merchandise, according to District Taco’s social media accounts.

Prior to the construction announcement, there was question if District Taco could purchase space in Tenley View. The Advisory Neighborhood Commission made an exception in September 2015 for District Taco and waived the law that barred chain stores at the Tenley View Apartments, where District Taco is set to open. The law requires stores to have less than five D.C. locations to build at this site, and though District Taco only has three D.C. locations. There are several Virginia locations and plans to open more in the future, according to the Tenleytown D.C. website. The restaurant was originally slated to open a few months after the announcement last September.

Muncheez, a casual Lebanese restaurant, will also open soon in the same complex, according to Douglas Development who own Tenley View.

The Tenleytown location and its hours are not yet listed on the restaurant’s website. This will be the fourth Mexican-style restaurant in Tenleytown, competing with the Wisconsin Avenue locations of Guapo’s, Cactus Cantina and Chipotle.
