After leading the AU Women’s Basketball team to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history, Megan Gebbia signed a three-year contract extension. Gebbia’s new contract keeps the reigning Patriot League Coach of the Year with AU through the 2021 season.
“I am tremendously excited to announce the extension of coach Megan Gebbia’s contract with American University,” AU Director of Athletics and Recreation Billy Walker said on aueagles.com. “This demonstrates our shared commitment to keep our program among the elite ranks in the Patriot League for years to come under Megan’s leadership.”
In just two years, Gebbia has brought the program to new heights. Gebbia led AU to a 22-10 record and a Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) postseason appearance in her first season. In the 2014-15 season, Gebbia guided the Eagles to a 24-9 record, which set the program record for single-season victories. She also delivered the first Patriot League Championship to the Eagles this year and brought the program to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.
“I am honored to continue my time here at American University," Gebbia said on aueagles.com. "It has been a tremendous two years, and I am very excited for the future of this program.
Her career winning percentage, 70.1 percent, is the best in Patriot League history. Gebbia is 30-6 in Patriot League games, including a 4-1 record in the Patriot League Tournament.
The Athletic Communications office at AU said they cannot disclose the financial details of Gebbia’s contract extension.
Similarly, men’s basketball head coach Mike Brennan also received a contract extension after leading the Eagles to a Patriot League tournament championship in the 2013-14 season. The new contract keeps Brennan with AU through 2020. The financial details of Brennan’s contract extension are also undisclosed from the public.
"Coach Gebbia has clearly proven herself as an outstanding coach, but more importantly, she has demonstrated her vast ability as a leader, mentor and role model for our student-athletes,” Walker said on aueagles.com. “There's no doubt in my mind that the future is bright for AU Women's Basketball."
