SG to advocate for mental health awareness

Student Government is planning to put a focus on campus mental health, according to remarks by SG Chief of Staff William McNamara during the Jan. 25 meeting of the Undergraduate Senate.

McNamara will organize an Out of the Darkness campus walk, sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, within the next two months, he said.

The three to five mile walks, which take place on campuses and in communities across the country, aim to advocate for mental health and increase awareness for depression and suicide prevention. Proceeds from the event will support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, which helps to fund programs to prevent suicide raise awareness about depression and suicide, according to AFSP’s website.

“Mental Health Advocacy has always been very important to me and I feel like now is a good as time as ever to really pressure the administration to create meaningful change and that is the mission I will dedicate myself to for the rest of this year,” McNamara said in an email.
