Secret Study Spots: Four lesser-known places to cram for midterms

AU students seem to be learning and discovering at all times, and there is no reason why study time should be any different. For a change of scenery, here are four great places to study that you should definitely check out.

Modern Times Coffeehouse

Located on the bottom level of the Politics and Prose bookstore, Modern Times serves as a meeting place for lovers of books, caffeine, conversation, and the college-kid intellect. As such, studying profusely for hours on end is encouraged here. The lovely baristas will whip up any classic espresso drink to complement a customer’s studies. If you are thirsty, opt for the cafe mocha, and if you are hungry, the tomato soup.

When: Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Where: 5015 Connecticut Avenue NW
Walking distance: 0.8 miles (about 15 minutes) from Tenleytown Metro stop

The Perch

Nestled on the first floor of Anderson Hall lies the Perch. For those who live in Letts, Anderson, or Centennial, good luck finding a more convenient, nearby, and relaxing place to study. The Perch serves $1 tea and coffee, but be sure to bring your own mug (and perhaps a pillow to snuggle up with).

Open from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. every night, The Perch will help you stay awake long enough to finish your essay or memorize your Arabic vocabulary. The Perch will be that warm hug you need when you know there’s a long night of studying ahead of you. It will serve as your sanctuary in the later hours of the night, when learning must take place but your roommate needs some beauty sleep.

When: 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Where: Anderson Hall, first floor
Walking distance: on-campus

Fort Reno

For outdoor studying – which might very well come to an end when this nice weather does – Fort Reno is the perfect place. It’s beautiful, with fields of rolling grass and the gorgeous architecture of a fort located in the middle of the park. While you are studying drab economics or European history, you could be looking at this fort, which resembles a castle. Children’s soccer games or baseball practice frequently take place here, which lightens the mood and allows a little background noise, if that helps you study. Lie out on the grass or throw down a blanket and read with a view of near-royalty.

When: Daylight hours
Where: north on 40th street from Tenleytown
Walking distance: 0.4 miles (about 8 minutes) from Tenleytown Metro stop

The Little Red Fox

Only a few doors down from Politics and Prose, The Little Red Fox serves an equally good cup of coffee as Modern Times Coffeehouse, if not a better one. This place has a completely different vibe, a sort of new-age organic feel. It is also a market, selling locally made products friendly to vegans, vegetarians, pescatarians, and carnivores alike.

There are a few things to consider, however, before making the walk to the Little Red Fox to study. First, there is limited seating. With one long table inside, and several small ones outside, this may be the place to go if you want to study outdoors. Inside, to promote a community-based atmosphere, The Little Red Fox asks guests to refrain from laptop use. But don’t fret, while this may put a damper on your essay-writing, it proves the perfect place to do bookwork.

When: Tuesday through Sunday, 7:30 a.m. through 7:30 p.m.
Where: 5035 Connecticut Avenue NW
Walking distance: 0.8 miles (about 15 minutes) from Tenleytown Metro stop
