Richmond offense overwhelms women’s lacrosse

A powerful Richmond Spider offensive attack proved to be too much Feb. 27 as the AU women’s lacrosse team dropped its first game at Jacobs Field 13-4.

“We kind of knew what was going to happen from our film sessions and our scouting report,” head coach Emma Wallace said. “We did not execute our game plan to a T.”

After an Eagle (1-3, 0-0 PL) turnover by senior attacker Alex Lugovina, Richmond (2-2, 0-0 A10) scooped up the ground ball at 25:43 and sprinted downfield to score the game’s first points just 18 seconds later. The Spiders used a similar attack strategy less than two minutes later to go up two scores.

AU responded quickly to keep pace with the Spiders when sophomore midfielder Olivia Mangan cut in front of the Richmond net and scored the Eagles’ first of the afternoon at the 22:41 mark of the first half.

Richmond reasserted their offensive dominance going on a four-goal run to open up the score. Part of the Spiders offensive success came off of poor defensive for the Eagles who, on multiple scores, left Spider players unattended, allowing them to score easy goals.

The Eagles looked to gain some momentum before the break when AU made a last rush toward the Spider goal. Senior midfielder Emily Maher received a pass from freshman midfielder Sarah Bootman to give the Eagles a late first half goal.

Any momentum the Eagles hoped to have secured by the Maher goal quickly ended when Richmond’s Emily Doyle came from behind the Eagle net, and with her back turned, fired an over the shoulder shot at 26:34 to put the Spiders up five and then six at the 23:30 mark.

Eagle junior attacker Jamie Silverman took advantage of a free position shot to give AU its third goal of the game. AU cut the deficit to five when Lugovina scored off a feed by junior defender Emily Shields, who was credited with the assist.

Following the Lugovina goal, Richmond continued back on its offensive onslaught scoring another four goals to close out the game.

Throughout the game AU was not without offensive opportunities but lost the battle of turnovers 16-14, either failing to connect on passes or having the ball knocked out by the Spider defense.

The Eagles also struggled with draw controls, being outgained by Richmond 13-6.

After the game Wallace did find a bright spot in the play of senior goalkeeper Ashley Dalisera who was making her second career collegiate lacrosse appearance. Dalisera made five saves on the afternoon.

“Its what we do when the going get’s tough and how we react to that,” Wallace said about what her team needs to do to improve. “Choosing to step up as opposed to rolling over and letting the other team dictate what we do.”

AU looks to snap its two game losing streak when it travels to Baltimore to take on Johns Hopkins March 1, who the Eagles upset last year at Jacobs Field.
