Offense strong in first lacrosse victory of season

The AU lacrosse team secured its first victory of the season Feb. 16, overcoming an early deficit and hold off the Camels second half comeback, winning 11-9.

Senior attacker Alex Lugovina scored four goals in the match. Lugovina scored two in the first half and two in the second half to help propel AU past Campbell.

AU got off to a rocky start, allowing Campbell to score three unanswered goals in the first 10 minutes as AU was plagued turnovers and fouls.

With 18:55 left in the first sophomore Jessica Wojciechowski score an unassisted to goal to get the Eagles on the board. Less than a minute later sophomore midfielder Olivia Mangan, with the help of senior midfielder Emily Maher cut Campbell’s lead to one.

The goals by Wojciechowski and Mangan would begin six straight unanswered, propelling the Eagles into the lead, including two by Lugovina.

To start the second half the Eagles stayed in on the attack. Five minutes into the half Lugovina logged her third goal of the game. Just after Lugovina’s score, Maher’s shot reached the back of the net, but goal was waved off due to illegal stick. The Camels scored a goal at 24:41 but the Eagles answered back within two minutes.

Campbell gained momentum scoring three straight goals to come within one with 15 minutes to play. Wojciechoski scored a goal at 14:07 to give AU some breathing room. The Camels responded by scoring a goal a minute later.

AU’s junior midfielder Jamie Silverman entered the mix with a goal of her own, giving the Eagles two goal lead. Freshman midfielder Madison Hoon tacked on the final AU goal of the game with less than five minutes left of regulation. Going into a defensive approach the Eagles only allowed one more goal before the end of the game.

AU outshot Campbell 39-12, and earned twice as many ground balls 12-6. Wojciechowski registered her first career hat trick in the win.

The game which was scheduled to be the Eagles home opener, scheduled for Feb. 15, took place in Georgetown ‘s Multi-Sport field Feb. 16 due to the snowfall earlier in the week as Jacobs Field was unable to be cleared in time.

AU will take on University of Maryland Baltimore-County on Feb. 22 on the road in Baltimore, Md.
