Laverne Cox to speak at AU on Feb. 10

The Student Government Women’s Initiative will host actress and transgender activist Laverne Cox on Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Butler Boardroom.

The event is free, and is open to all AU students.

Cox can be seen in Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black,” in which she portrays Sophia Burset, a transgender woman who was sent to prison for credit card fraud.

Cox is also known as the first African-American transgender woman on an American reality TV show, appearing as a contestant on VH1’s “I Want to Work for Diddy,” according to the event’s Facebook page.

Cox also co-created, produced and starred in the VH1 reality show “TRANSform Me,” making her the first transgender woman to produce and star in her own television show. In 2013, Cox was the recipient of Anti-Violence Project’s Courage Award, according to the page.

Cox’s other credits include guest roles on:
-“Law and Order”
-“Law and Order: SVU”
-HBO’s “Bored to Death”
-“Musical Chairs”
-“Carla, 36 Saints”
-“Grand Street”
-“The Exhibitionists”
