Men’s soccer beats Princeton 2-0 while resting regulars

Three notable players were missing in the last out-of-conference game for the men’s soccer team against Princeton University on Nov. 5. Senior co-captains goalkeeper Billy Knutsen and defender Cristobal Soto, and fellow senior Colin Seigfreid did not play a for single minute.

The game against Princeton was a non-conference game, meaning the 2-0 victory will not factor into the Patriot League tournament ranking unless there happens to be a tie in points.

AU (6-7-5, 3-3-2 PL) got off to an early lead with a goal by senior midfielder Patrick Mehlert in the fifth minute of the game. The goal was a group effort, as senior forward Chris Kuramoto and freshman defenseman Jake Garcia earned assists in the 20-yard goal.

In the second half sophomore midfielder Charlie Hunter added to the lead with a goal in 76:46. Hunter’s goal was an unassisted goal that slipped through the hands of the Tigers’ goalkeeper.

Even though the Tigers (6-8-1, 3-1-1 IVY) outshot the Eagles 13 to eight, sophomore goalkeeper Dylan Hobert was able to shut out the offense all night. Hobert finished the day with seven saves. Throughout his 200 minutes of play acquired throughout the season, Hobert has not allowed a single goal.

The Eagles earned a staggering 20 fouls and one yellow card on freshman Chris Fanet. Seigfreid and Fanet each hold four yellow cards and if they earn a fifth, they will be required to miss their next game, which could be a game in the Patriot League Championship.

AU will be on the road on Nov. 9 for its season finale against Colgate University. This game will determine if the Eagles will be heading to the Patriot League tournament.
