Five reasons why skipping class isn’t a smart idea

The next time you have the urge to watch a show on Netflix or go to the gym during a class, remember these five reasons of why skipping is a bad idea.

1. Extra Work
Who wants to find a fellow classmate to copy the notes or receive the assignment? It creates extra work for you and your peer, not to mention more time to understand the assignment from missing the lecture. This unnecessary step can be avoided by attending class.

2. Waste of Money
Living on a budget in college is difficult, but all that budgeting is not worth it if you are skipping class. Taking classes at AU cost more a $100 per hour, so missing a lecture is essentially throwing money away, according to Test Drive Your Future. Even if you are not paying for your own tuition, you would not buy a pair of shoes more than $100 and then throw them away.

3. Lower Grade
Even though some college students do not believe this fact, teachers do notice when students skip class. “If a student misses class often, they miss out on attendance as well as participation points,” Adam Fishbein, a college writing professor, said in an email. “That can drop a student down a whole letter grade, not to mention all the useful lessons and discussions they’ll miss.” Skipping class also gives the student a negative reputation with the professor, making him or her less likely to bump the student up a grade or writer a recommendation letter if they believe you are lazy and unreliable.

4. Missing Out
Not having a friend in class makes it even more crucial to attend the class. You could meet some new friends and build close bonds that otherwise would not form if you skipped class often. Your peers will not know who you are if you skip class, which will make them less likely to explain the last class’s notes or bring you an assignment.

5. Laziness
Have you ever heard the phrase “once you stop, you can’t stop?” This pertains to skipping class because once a student starts skipping class, it is difficult to get back into attending class. You start sleeping later and are less willing to keep up with the building assignments. By attending class, you build a schedule that works best for you so you can fit in the gym, a social life and studying.
