AU men’s soccer team beat the Holy Cross Crusaders on Oct. 5, tying the Eagles and U.S. Military Academy for first place in the Patriot League.
The Eagles (4-4-2, 2-0-0 PL) got an early start, scoring their first goal in the third minute. The goal came off the foot of senior forward Colin Seigfreid from 18 yards out. Senior midfielder Patrick Mehlert and freshman forward Michael Cherry assisted Seigfreid.
Mehlert scored a goal of his own in the in the 34th minute of the game when he fiercely kicked the ball into the back of the net from 20 yards away. Michael Cherry earned his second assist of the game, and now has a team leading three assists.
The Crusaders (3-5-1, 1-1-1 PL) attempted to answer back with four shots on goal in the first half. Senior goalkeeper Billy Knutsen earned himself four saves in the half and went on to collect another save in the second half. The win also marks Knutsen’s fourth shutout of the season.
In the second half, AU continued to apply pressure. Junior defender Conor Osborne scored his first goal of the season in the 84th minute, he was assisted by Seigfreid. The goal was scored from 25 yards out past Holy Cross junior goalkeeper Michael Thompson, the Crusader’s second goalie of the game.
However, the Eagles collected 11 fouls, the most since their fifth game of the season in a double overtime tie against Hartford on Sept. 13.
The Eagles will play against United States Naval Academy on Oct. 9 at Reeves Field.
