Picking the right 5k for you

As the summer comes to an end, runners wanting to take advantage of the cooler weather can find 5 kilometer races across D.C. The Eagle has compiled a list of the top five running events in the D.C. area that can be reached by Metro or bike.

1. Tidal Basin Run
The Tidal Basin Run is a free 5K, 3K, and 1,500 meter run hosted every third Wednesday of the month at Hains Point, East Potomac Park.
The next event will take place on Sept. 18 with the 5K race beginning at 12 p.m. near Parking Area 13 on the east side of Ohio Drive SW, a 10 minute bike ride from the Waterfront Metro Station.

2. Color Run
The Color Run, one of D.C.’s messiest 5k races, has two rules: start the race wearing white and finish it covered in color.
Participants are doused in different colors throughout a course circling the National Harbor in Prince George’s County on Sept. 22.
This event can be reached by the 35 Bus from the Southern Ave Metro Station.
General admission to the Color Run is sold out, but those looking to participate can still gain a spot by fundraising with Color Run’s partner, Back on My Feet. The minimum amount to raise for entry is $100.

3. Stop Cancer Now 5k
If you want to avoid the mess of the Color Run, the Stop Cancer Now 5k takes place on Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. The race will run along the C&O Canal Trail at the Georgetown Waterfront and registration fee is $25.

4. The Undy 5000
The Undy 5000 will take place Sept. 28 over a 5k course starting at the Tennis Center on Colorado Avenue and runs through Rock Creek Park. The registration fee is $40 on race day.

5. Color in Motion
If you’re looking to become a human canvas and can’t wait for the Color Run later this month, Color in Motion is your 5k. This race will take place on Sept. 14 at 9:30 a.m. in RFK Stadium with a registration fee of $50.
