Lindsay Muri scored a second half goal against LaSale to tie the game and force overtime

Despite late rally, women’s soccer falls in overtime

Despite scoring two goals in just under two minutes and tying the game, the AU women’s soccer team dropped a road contest to LaSale 3-2 in overtime.

“Our team showed a lot of character tonight,” head coach Anabel Jimenez Hering told AUEagles.com. “The way we came back and the effort we gave is something we will build on.”

LaSale came out strong in the first half, peppering AU keeper Charlene Belanger with 15 shots. Two of those shots, one from Anna Dolhansky and another from Renee Washington, found the back of the net giving the Explorers a 2-0 lead halfway through the game.

LaSale launched a total of 32 shots, 14 on goal as Belanger made 11 saves that night.

The Eagles’ chance of winning seemed bleak until the 75th minute when Kogod School of Business freshman Marley Jennings received a pass from School of Communication freshman Sara Perlman, putting the ball in the back of the net and cutting the Explorers’ lead.

SOC junior Lindsay Muri scored her second goal in three games less than two minutes later with a 77th minute strike. College of Arts and Sciences freshman Ashley Bonner received the assist.

The Eagle defense stayed strong, keeping the LaSale attack from scoring when the Explorers received a corner kick in the 89th minute.

However, LaSale quickly regained the lead in overtime after Dolhansky notched the 91st minute goal with the assist from Maryam Huseini.

AU would fail to find an equalizer, dropping their fourth match of the season.

The Eagles will be return to Reeves Field for their next game Sept. 10 against George Mason University.
