North Hall renamed Cassell Hall

Correction appended

AU unveiled Cassell Hall as the new title for North Hall on Jan. 14. The building is named after the Cassell family, which donated $3 million in gifts to the University.

Jack Cassell and his family unveiled a sign revealing the hall’s new name at a morning ceremony.

Cassell, a current AU trustee, alumnus, former president of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity and recipient the Stafford H. Cassell Student Achievement Award, gave the money to the University in the name of the Cassell family, according to an AU article.

The hall is the first AU residence hall named in honor of a philanthropic gift, according to the University.

The residence hall will house about 360 upperclassman in suite-style rooms, according to an AU article. It will also host a fitness center called the Stafford H. Cassell, Jr. Fitness Center, named after Cassell’s twin brother who also graduated AU in 1977, according to the University.

AU runs in the family

Stafford H. “Pop” Cassell, Jack Cassell’s father, was an AU alumnus, coach, athletic director and University vice president, according to the article.

The Cassell family lived on AU’s campus while Stafford Cassell worked at AU, according to the University. The AU community later emotionally supported the family after Stafford Cassell Sr.’s death.

Jack Cassell’s family has followed his footsteps. His daughter Jacqueline Cassell, a junior in the School of Communication, and stepson Devon Bradley, a junior in the Kogod School of Business, attend AU.

At the unveiling, President Neil Kerwin expressed his and the University’s gratitude to the Cassell family.

“In the history of this University," Kerwin said, "there are no families that I am aware of that have done more to leave a mark on this institution than the Cassell family."

Correction: This article previously stated that Cassell Hall is the first building at AU that was named in honor of a philanthropic gift to the University. It is actually the first residence hall to be named as such. A number of buildings at AU, including the Greenberg Theatre, the Katzen Arts Center and the Kay Spiritual Life Center are named for people who made gifts to the University.
