Leave the backpack at home for Inauguration Day

Students planning to attend the Inauguration will want to bring a warm coat but should keep in mind that several items will be prohibited, according to the event’s official website.

Students should avoid bringing backpacks, coolers and any food other than small snacks. Umbrellas will also not be allowed in ticketed viewing areas.

To have a fun and safe day, make sure these items stay in dorm rooms:

•Umbrellas,

•Backpacks, bags, or suitcases,

•Thermoses or coolers,

•Alcohol,

•Mace and/or pepper spray,

•Campaign signs or posters,

•Air horns,

•Firearms and ammunition (real or fake),

•Knives or any other blades, including pocket knives,

•Explosives of any kind,

•Animals (other than service animals),

•Portable chairs (other than Americans with Disabilities Act-approved chairs),

•Food (other than a “small snack”) and

•Tripods, monopads and bags for large cameras.

Security guards also reserve the right to take anything that may pose a threat to the public, according to the website. There will be no check stations for confiscated items.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has created a special “Presidential Inauguration” page to help visitors plan the quickest route to the celebration. The site feature a trip planner that lists the closest Metro stations to get to the Parade, the Capitol or the White House, complete with walking instructions and maps.
