First Costco in D.C. opens

The first Costco in D.C opened on Nov. 29.

Located on Market Street NE, the opening of the store attracted many D.C. residents, among them Vice President Joe Biden.

D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray also stopped by the opening. Gray believes the store will provide over 1,200 jobs over the next 30 years, according to Fox 5 news.

“We already have made an impact on the local job market,” Joe Elutrio, the warehouse manager, said. “We look forward to contributing to the community in many ways.”

The new Costco offers a food court, fresh bakery, wine, liquor, and other specialty departments. Customers must pay $55 a year to be a member and shop at Costco.

Prior to Nov. 29, the nearest Costco was 10 miles away in Pentagon City, Va.

While this is the first location within the D.C borders, the new location will become the 619th worldwide.
