AU students win $5,000 scholarship to study in Canada next semester

Correction appended

Five of the 20 American students awarded this year with the Killam Fellowship currently attend AU.

The Killam Fellowship, run by Fulbright Canada, awards U.S. and Canadian undergraduate students $5,000 per semester to study in the other country for up to a year, according to its website.

The AU students who received this award include:

• Alex Olson, a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences;

• Christal Jerez, a senior in CAS;

• Josh Halpren, a junior in CAS and School of Public Affairs;

• José Ramirez-Rívera, a junior in the School of International Service and

• Christina Pierpaoli, a CAS junior

Olson and Jerez are currently in Canada on the scholarship, and Halpren, Ramirez-Rívera and Pierpaoli will study in Canada in the spring.

“I was looking into studying abroad, and while it seems impossible given the sheer number available, I wasn’t getting very excited about any of the particular programs,” Halpren said. “When Merit Awards sent out an e-mail calling for applicants, I jumped at the opportunity.”

The program’s application allows the United States and Canada to forge cross-cultural connections between both countries, according to the website.

“The Killam Fellowship interested me because it meant that I could explore a culture that is sometimes overlooked due to its proximity to the States,” Olson said.

Correction: This article previously did not include Jerez, who is abroad now on the scholarship along with Olson. The article also incorrectly identified the Killam Fellowship as "Killiam." Also, Ramirez-Rívera is a junior, not a senior.
