AU Student Government plans to become more inclusive this year under the leadership of SG President Emily Yu.
Yu summarized her goals for the year as “inclusion, support and community” in an email to The Eagle.
To achieve her goals, Yu will be helping SG’s Ethnic and Cultural Committee to become a more active presence on campus, reaching out to a more diverse student population that has not been previously involved with SG.
“I think it’s something SG always tried to do,” Yu said.
SG Vice President Palak Gosar will also be trying to encourage more student involvement in SG, including “[working] with smaller organizations to help sponsor events.”
Yu said she hopes to connect with students by working with the newly-formed Center for Diversity and Inclusion, International Student Support Services and Disabilities Support Services.
Yu plans to have SG co-sponsor election events with the political clubs on campus. These events will help create a better sense of community and increase political awareness on campus, she said.
SG will also be working with the recently established Interfaith Coalition to help connect students and interfaith communities on campus.
SG will begin the year with Artemas Ward week, beginning Sept. 7 and ending Sept. 15. It will be a carnival day, an unnamed Kennedy Political Union speaker on Sept. 12 and a movie on Sept. 7, Gosar said. KPU will announce the name of the speaker on the evening Sept. 3.
“It’s going to be exciting,” Gosar said.
SG will also sponsor Founder’s Day as well as host a KPU speaker and a Student Union Board concert during All-American Weekend, according to Yu.
Gosar hopes to collect more student input on SG events this year, including concerts. He has been working with SUB to reflect the input, but SG is limited by to some degree by its budget.
SG has begun the early stages of planning Founders’ Day and Gosar looks hopes to accommodate more students by finding a larger venue or a different method of ticket distribution, Yu said.
“Overall, I think it’s going to be a really cool year in terms of what we bring to campus and how it falls together,” Gosar said.
