The AU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were impressive at Howard University, winning 20 of 26 events and coming away with the victory Dec. 3.
Wurm wins multiple events on men’s side
Matt Wurm won both the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.64 and 200 free with a time 1:46.22. Wurm was also on the first place 200-yard medley relay team with Bobby Ballance, Ming Ong and Robert Feasley.
In addition to Wurm’s performance in the 100 free, AU’s Sam Miller and Dylan Hadden finished in second and third with times of 49.30 and 51.22, respectively.
Other winners for the men’s team included Ballance, who won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.36, and Harrison Volaski, who posted a time of 2:02.90 in the 200 individual medley.
The Eagles also swept the top three spots in the 100-yard butterfly, as Feasely won (53.04), Andrew Jackwin (54.17) came in second and James Connors (55.96) finished third.
Howard’s men’s team won only two events on the afternoon. Miles Hector won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:14.47, while Zadok Isaacs won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.30.
The 200 freestyle relay came down to the wire as AU’s team of Ross Honig, Charlie Taffet, Ryan Saunders and Kevin Bond won with a time of 1:36.26. The Eagles’ finish was a mere 63 tenths of a second ahead of the Howard squad.
For the Eagles, Khristian Vega won the men’s one-meter diving competition with a score of 164.70 and the three-meter competition with a score of 133.50.
As a team, AU outscored the Bison 137-65.
Breen and Parker dominate in women’s competition
The women’s team defeated the Bison 117-75 with Leah Breen earning three of the team’s five wins. Breen won titles in the 50 free with a time of 25.31, the 100 free in 53.45 and the 200 free in 2:00.33.
Kerri Knippenberg won the 1,000 fly with a time of 11:31.73 for the Eagles, while Ariana Wohlstattar came in second at 11:44.01.
AU controlled the 500-yard freestyle with a winning time of 5:27.60 recorded by Miriam Crispo.
In the same event, Shelby Legel finished second with a time of 5:43.31, and Wohlstattar’s time of 5:47.75 was good for third place.
AU’s Elinor Shetter won the 200 IM with a time of 2:17.84, and Grace Ibraham took home first place in the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.30.
Melissa Parker continued her strong season with wins in the one-meter and three-meter diving competition with scores of 228.90 and 283.05, respectively.
The Eagles are next in action Jan. 14 when they head to Harrisonburg, Va., to take on James Madison University, Georgetown University and the Virginia Military Institute.
