Housing and Dining to hold campus-wide garage sale

Housing and Dining Programs will hold its first Project Move-Out Community Sale this week in an effort to reuse goods and eliminate waste in AU residence halls and offices.

Members of the AU community can donate any excess items they may have at the end of the semester, such as gently used clothing, office supplies, unopened food, toiletry items, small furniture and electronics, according to Housing and Dining official Laura Matteo. Donated items will then be sold back to the AU community for $10 or less.

Items will be collected on North side, South side and Tenley Campus April 20-29 at the following times:

8 - 10 p.m. on all weekdays

1 - 5 p.m. on April 23

6 - 10 p.m. on April 24

A special “Pod on the Quad” event will be held on the Friedheim Quadrangle April 27-29 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. to allow off-campus students, staff and community members to easily donate their items.

Items will be sold in the Tavern on April 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at prices ranging from 50 cents to $10.

“A shirt will be $1, whether it be a Hanes shirt or a pricey Armani shirt,” Matteo said.

An “early bird special” will occur from 8 to 9 a.m. and offer bargains where nothing will be priced for more than $5. Shoppers must pay a $5 fee to partake in the special. Admission is free after 9 a.m.

Project Move-Out will give all proceeds and unsold items to local charities, including M.O.M.I.E.’s TLC, A Wider Circle, Capital Area Food Bank and Damien Ministries.

Matteo said the community sale promotes AU’s Zero-Waste policy, and said she believes Project Move-Out will give new life to items that would otherwise have been thrown out or never used.

“We are all about focusing on sustainability within both the AU community and the D.C. community,” Matteo said. “You may not need these items, but someone else does.”
